ReinyRooster Posted March 31, 2014 #1 Posted March 31, 2014 Just bought a new open face helmet and have two complete sets of J&M HS-8154-OF headsets....the problem is the speakers are too thick to fit properly in this new Gmax helmet, hitting my ears. They were not an issue in my old HJC helmet.....like the new helmet and don't really wanna have to return it and swap for another....do other headset manufactures make thinner/smaller speakers? From the look of the J&M, you can't just disconnect the speakers and change them.....so I'm guessing it's either new headset of new helmet.
Marcarl Posted March 31, 2014 #2 Posted March 31, 2014 Couple of words came to mind,,, but I don't think that they would be helpful at present. One of them had to do with what you put the helmet on and the other was a bit on the descriptive side. BUT I never said anything, and if called to witness,, I'll know nothing. Question is, how thick are the speakers you have a problem with, then I'll measure what I got from Ed-Sets.
ReinyRooster Posted March 31, 2014 Author #3 Posted March 31, 2014 Carl....your verbal withhold is amazing and completely out of character!! LOL! The speakers have just been calipered at .506 inches at there thickest.
Gary N. Posted March 31, 2014 #4 Posted March 31, 2014 Reiny, you have to cut holes in the styrofoam in order for the speakers to fit. Had to do the same with our new Gmax helmets. I used a hole saw blade the right diameter to cut the foam back to the helmet shell.
ReinyRooster Posted March 31, 2014 Author #5 Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) O.K. Gary, thanks. Was hoping to not have to do that but I guess that is an option.....the cheapest one as well. O.K...just removed the cheek pad portion and see where I can carve out a bed for the speakers....time for the dremmel tool!! Edited March 31, 2014 by ReinyRooster56
Atoolnut Posted March 31, 2014 #6 Posted March 31, 2014 I had to do the same..I used a forstner bit the same size to carve out the foam.it wasn't as fast as a dremel but I could see how much to take out without going too deep
Bert2006 Posted March 31, 2014 #7 Posted March 31, 2014 Did not need to remove foam from helmets for mine, but could not use the pads provided with the speakers, just inserted the the speaker behind mesh.
Marcarl Posted March 31, 2014 #8 Posted March 31, 2014 Mine mic'ed out at .58" with the foam holder, .337" without the holder.
ReinyRooster Posted March 31, 2014 Author #9 Posted March 31, 2014 Thanks for the input guys....initially when I looked I didn't think there was enough material in depth to make it work, that why I was looking at alternatives but after taking things apart, I see there is enough room to carve it out. That's now the plan. Bringing the bike home from storage next weekend.....cant wait to ride!!
Gary N. Posted March 31, 2014 #10 Posted March 31, 2014 When I bought our helmets from Sierra Electronics they told me what I needed to do to fit the speakers. On a side note after wearing the new helmets for an hour or so it felt like someone had pounded nails into my forehead. With the liner back out and some coarse sandpaper I was able to take about 1/4 inch of foam off of the affected area. Fits fine and feels good now.
