tyota9 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Hey guys, the new guy is still learning here, so I have an issue, when I pull my front hand brake the brake light does not illuminate, but when I push the foot brake pedal the light does illuminate. I thought it was the switch(along with some others on this site as well) so I removed the switch of the the hand lever and cleaned all the contacts and still doesn't work, I can hear the clicking sound when I pull the lever, I have checked fuses etc, no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thx guys!!
djh3 Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Are you sure the switch is getting a long enough range of motion to activate. I have not heard of one getting out of adjustment but no we are looking for something out of the ordinary. I am not sure where the connectors are or if the 2 switches have different connectors, but maybe you could plug the known good one into the brake handle to check out that wiring. You are probably at the point you are going to need a multi meter to trouble shoot the switch to see if it is good. Which may be easier than chasing connectors. Switch in normal (off) should read "open" closed (brakes on) should read 000 or close maybe 002 or something close. I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will chime in here and straighten me out. Do all the other lights work normally, signals, headlight running lights etc? Just pokin in the dark a little. Someone else just had there spedo and radio go poof. Everything else worked. turns out the fuse looked good but in truth was bad, did not OHM out correctly. I dont know if maybe the front switch is fused seperatly from the rear as a "safety" precaution in case maybe one or the other goes bad the other would still work.
bongobobny Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 Yup! DJH is right on track, sort of! All the brake light switch does is supply 12V to the brake light relay, and if the back brake is working then it's pretty much the switch. A quick test would be to follow the brake light switch to the connector and disconnect it. The brake light should magically come on! The whole circuit is quite complicated an affair, and the schematic, I believe, shows that without voltage it connects 12 volts to the brake light but with voltage it disconnects the voltage from the brake lights. Now, long story short, when either front or rear brakes are off, 12 volts goes thru both switches for cruise, and to turn off the brake lights. Hit either brake and it disconnects the 12 volts for both the cruise and the brake light relay resulting in the contacts for the brake lights on the relay to connect!! Sooo, if you unplug the front brake switch it should turn the brake lights on! Unfortunately I think you will find the connector inside the fairing but I'm not 100% on that. My RSV is sleeping and can't rush out and look. If you remove the brake switch from the front handle if the switch was good the brake light SHOULD come on because the switch is normally pushed in with the brake off, and pulled out via the internal spring when you squeeze the brake lever. If the switch isn't travelling far enough it may not disconnect the 12 volts and prevent the brake light from coming on. The rear disconnects the 12 volts when it is pulled in via the linkage connected to the brake pedal at the pivot shaft...
