Just purchased an 84 Venture with 44,000 on it. I can start the bike with the choke on and keep it running as long as I leave the choke on and not touch the gas. If I touch the throttle or start to take the choke off it dies. My thought is to remove the carbs and clean them up as I don't know how long it's been sitting.

Does this sound like the right place to start?

Sea-Foam Soak.

Yes, it is a carb issue. Likely blocked pilot (idle) circuits that are very small, small enough that Seafoam will not clear the passageways. I've used small dia. copper wire plus spray carb cleaner to clean the openings. These circuits affect throttle response from startup, idle, and thru mid-range.

Take a can of Sea Foam spray or Techron spray then on the bottom of the carbs are a drain hose that is opened by a screw on the bottom of each carb. Drain the carbs into a can. Then with the screw open, insert the red straw into the hose and cover the end of the hose with a rag to prevent back spray.

Use a ¼ can of spray into each carb. Once you spray it in, close the screw and let set over night. Then drain the carbs into a can. Close all the screws and let the gas pump cycle a couple of times and try that. Good luck

And welcome !! :happy65:

If you find that they are plugged. I found that guitar string works best. High E string. It's very thin diameter. I tried brass string on one of my carbs and it would nt poke through the crud.

Just another tip

Thanks guys,

After trying sea foam spray and letting it soak a couple days, I drained the carbs, pumped fresh gas in and same issues. I knew I should just pull them off and look inside and I'm so glad I did. I have brown sludge sitting in them. I'll look for a rebuild kit and tackle them my next free day.

I appreciate all of your input!
