Droneh8tr Posted March 24, 2014 #1 Posted March 24, 2014 I just bought a 1983 Venture Royale, JYA31M00XDA002576, with 50,000 miles. I've ridden it around the neighborhood and it definitely lacks any giddy up.. The wiring is a basket case as the PO clamped wires all over to accomidate his "customizing".. As of yet I haven't come across anything I really wasn't expecting so I'm not dissapointed with my purchase. With that said, Ive got the bike pretty torn apart and expect to do more the more I learn.. This is where you all come in. Are their things I really have to spend some time inspecting or buying for replacement. You know like maybe recalls the bike might have or parts everyone know is going to fail any moment.. I know the starter is a weak spot on these bikes so i'll be determining if I have 2 brush or 4 brush.. I think the consensus is that I should put a 4 brush on.. Anything else? I will be removing/cleaning the carbs soon. Anything special that I should look for in them? You see where I'm going with this, the bike is tore apart so NOW is the time to handle any quirks the bike might have.. I'm moving quickly as I do want it for the summer.. Thanks
Trader Posted March 25, 2014 #2 Posted March 25, 2014 For sure change the plugs, oil and if the bike has sat for any length of time, bleed out the brakes and clutch fluids. I would consider progressive front springs and a Condor Brace and the handling will be amazing. (Super brace but made by our own Condor) No get up and go? SOMETHINGS NOT RIGHT!!! These things move! Probably only running on 3 cyl. They run surprising well on only 3. When you start it up, feel the pipes (don't wait too long or you'll burn!) A cooler pipe will indicate the one not firing. You may need to do some carb cleaning. SEAFOAM!!!!! (at the least!) You may want to check the neck bearings while you have it stripped down....and inspect the frame....83's are known to crack at the back If you do have a 2 brush starter, you can do a ground mod (by Dingy I think) And upgrade the battery cables to 4 gauge. (or just go to 4 brush) Have you done the battery warning bypass? If you have a gel or glass mat battery you will will need to do that to eliminate the flashing red warning light and battery icon. You should pull the back wheel and grease the splines, and check the brakes while you are at it. Have fun! These are great bikes! The TCI is unique to 83...but Dingy had done a replacement group buy if yours goes south.
Flyinfool Posted March 25, 2014 #3 Posted March 25, 2014 (edited) Dingy also has the 4AWG welding cable upgrade. This is a help whether you have a 2 or 4 brush starter. My 2 brush with the ground mod and heavier cables, spins the engine just fine hot or cold. If I ever need to replace the starter it will then get the 4 brush. No get up and go? What rpm are you shifting at? Red line is not hurting these motors. These motors prefer higher RPMSs. Many people new to these bikes try to run it like a harley, low RPM makes it a dog. It will pick up the front wheel when all is right, so be ready for that. 2ns gear is a known issue. You do not want it jumping out of gear near red line. Droneh8tr Posted March 25, 2014 Author #4 Posted March 25, 2014 Good start to my list.. Yeah the power isn't there, but I'm not worried at the moment as it appears 1 carb is leaking and I have no doubt their gummed up.. No problem, I'll dismantle and clean. The steering feels bumpy. I'm thinking the bearing need lube and what I'm feeling is the bearings tryin to roll as I turn. CRACK AT THE BACK.. I'll definitely look closely at that.. The battery warning bypass.. well... I would rather have it work like its suppose to... BUT.. I also want a maintenance free battery.. So I'm thinking I'll have to do the bypass trick. I saw it somewhere, I'll have to go find it again. Anyway, all of this is so it can be ridden to work and pleasure, but mostly to make sure its reliable for a 2100 mile trip to Canada in late august..
