Eck Posted March 20, 2014 #1 Posted March 20, 2014 I have come to the conclusion that inquiring about a storm shelter is like buying a motorcycle. So many choices, types, styles, pros & cons...etc... It sure makes one go nuts in making a final decision........... Getting one installed March 31st though...

Eck Posted March 20, 2014 Author #4 Posted March 20, 2014 Storm shelter or Doomsday shelter?? If it's doomsday, I would rather just pass on than live anyway.. I figure there wont be much left but a lot of starvation, robberies, killings and suffering anyway. Truly NOT the life style I would want to live in. Heck, wouldn't be able to ride a scooter either.. Well, yes and no on the basement....
Huggy Posted March 20, 2014 #5 Posted March 20, 2014 It's a code name for a man cave!!!!! I can see it now, in dog house off to "shelter", in laws show up off to the "shelter", Biker friends show up,everyone's off to see the "shelter". Just make sure it's stocked with beer, snacks and 55in flat screen HD tv!!!!!! Don't want to rough it too much while your down there!!!!!
Flyinfool Posted March 20, 2014 #6 Posted March 20, 2014 I live close to the lake, they tell me that it is not possible to have tornadoes this close to the lake We do not have to worry about hurricanes up here ......... When the tornado sirens do go off I usually go out side to watch.

When the tornado sirens do go off I usually go out side to watch. Is this why the word fool is part of your screen name? Mother Nature can zap you anywhere you are on the planet. If you have even been a witness to the destruction caused by tornadoes and hurricanes you might want to rethink your Tornado warning response strategy.Part of my job requires me to organize and conduct emergency response drills in the county I live in. In the case of inclement weather outside is the last place you want to go. That is why they put out those sirens to warn you to take shelter. If your man cave is on the lowest floor of the structure, in the center away from exterior doors and windows and stocked with beer..... So be it. Just saying...... bongobobny Posted March 21, 2014 #14 Posted March 21, 2014 Bottom line though, when your time is up, it's up!!!
Dragonslayer Posted March 21, 2014 #15 Posted March 21, 2014 Bottom line though, when your time is up, it's up!!! I'll go with that.... I'm still betting on the fiery motorcycle crash.
djh3 Posted March 21, 2014 #16 Posted March 21, 2014 After living in tornado alley for 20yr in a mobile home, I figure I must have used up my allotment of luck. We did spend some time in the fraidy hole though. If you live in an area where you deem it a good investment its up to you. Dragonslayer is right though them things can come up just about anywhere, as was evident here in Fla last year.
Flyinfool Posted March 21, 2014 #17 Posted March 21, 2014 Bottom line though, when your time is up, it's up!!! When the good Lord decides my time is up, He has more ways to get it done than we can ever think up ways to try to prevent it. But then I have decided that it looked ugly enough to get me to go hide in a hole in the ground.
Dragonslayer Posted March 21, 2014 #18 Posted March 21, 2014 When the good Lord decides my time is up, He has more ways to get it done than we can ever think up ways to try to prevent it. But then I have decided that it looked ugly enough to get me to go hide in a hole in the ground. Seriously, With all due respect to everyone reading this. This thread seems to be turning into a faith based argument against self preservation. I'll just share this from my personal life and death experience. May 7th, 1971, I was involved in a motorcycle/car head on collision which was documented by the accident forensic investigators to be a combined impact speed of more than 150 mph. During that life experience, I experienced what is commonly referred to as a near death experience. During that near death experience, it is my recollection that I was being held in the hands of the Good Lord at the end of the commonly referred to, tunnel of light. At that time, the Good Lord gave me a choice to continue with him in ecstasy or return and endure the pain. My answer was, that I must return because at that time I felt that my life was unfinished. Knowing what I know now, 43 years later, I will admit that it might not have been a bad idea to spend more time considering the alternative. Because since then, I certainly have experienced my share of pain. But, what can I say, I was young and wanted to live. I'm just saying, that I believe that in life as well as death the Good Lord gives us free will to make choices. What choices we/you make are up to you. You can chose to hide in a hole for self preservation or stand in the path of a tornado to see if it's your time to go. And, I agree I have no desire to hang around after the apocalypse Zombie, Mayan, second coming or otherwise. Regardless, of your/our choices we are not meant to know the time or place of our demise or his return. The foregoing is how I feel, and I truly respect your beliefs whatever they may be. Just saying.....
awsmsrv Posted March 21, 2014 #19 Posted March 21, 2014 After me! As my Dad used to say, "Me first after you".
bongobobny Posted March 21, 2014 #20 Posted March 21, 2014 Dragonslayer, you never cease to amaze me! Very interesting story! Now given the choice I would rather dive into the tornado shelter then tempt fate! If you, live in an area that it is in your best interests to build a storm shelter then by all means do so. The way I see it, life is a very precious gift from God and I am grateful for every day I'm given so I'm going to live accordingly. I strongly doubt that God wants me to tempt Him by dangerous actions just because He holds the time of my death. That being said, fiery motorcycle crash?? Not a bad thing to be doing what you enjoy at the time...
Eck Posted March 21, 2014 Author #21 Posted March 21, 2014 In getting back to the discussion of Storm shelters..... Eck, we got one and have never used it, and thats just the way I like it. those folks come in and was gone three hours. Fain storm shelters is where we got ours. I hate the thoughts of burring 5k in the dirt, but living in a tornado prone area , I would be happy never having to use this storm shelter either... We are getting this one installed. Not a bad thing to be doing what you enjoy at the time...Amen, brother especially about being grateful for each day. You may note that one of the latin phrases in my signature is Carpe Diem. With that being said, and your mention of doing what you love at the time. The fiery motorcycle crash only works if it is instantaneous otherwise the pain part is a real downer. Been there have the scars and the t-shirts. Other ways I have considered and I'm not saying it will be my choice is: 1. A massive heart attack during really good sex. 2. Exploding from an all you can each crab leg feast. Although after having said that, both options are two of the mortal sins, lust and gluttony. I guess I am mortal after all. Flyinfool Posted March 21, 2014 #23 Posted March 21, 2014 Sorry about hijacking the thread, I thought that I had used adequate smilies to not be taken to seriously. That does look interesting. OK then there is the safety officer side of me that shows thru. Is there a system of some sort to notify authorities that you have this so that they will know to check it in the aftermath of a major storm? Are there any trees in the vicinity that could topple and pin the door shut? Have you tried your cell phone from underground to see if you can call out? (This assumes that the cell system would still be functional in the aftermath of a major storm.) Would it be appropriate to mount a battery powered strobe light on the top of the door (or highest point) that could be used if you are trapped inside by debris?
buddy Posted March 21, 2014 #24 Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) We have a storm cellar here on the farm home made out of steel lucky to get three people in it considering the first family had four in the family go figure? Anyway we been here 12yrs haven't used it yet Lived my whole life in tornado alley which is every day life to me we had close calls but the worst was when I was in grade school a tornado hit our farm and tore everything down but our house but my aunt & uncle lost everything We watched the weather that night and all was good but around midnight tornado hit both farms course I slept through it lol weird how they move took our farm equipment and move it to my uncle farm did the same for them moved his equipment to our farm We both had cellars too but did us no good that night in 1972 when the weather warnings relied on folks calling in when a tornado was on the ground Weather warnings come a long ways in 40yrs Edited March 21, 2014 by buddy
Eck Posted March 21, 2014 Author #25 Posted March 21, 2014 Is there a system of some sort to notify authorities that you have this so that they will know to check it in the aftermath of a major storm? Every storm shelter in Alabama is registered for location for just that concern and reason Are there any trees in the vicinity that could topple and pin the door shut? There is not one tree around my planned shelter site, however one could drop in but so could a house, shed, fence, or even a vehicle could be blown over the door where we could not get out.. but hey, we would hopefully be alive and the shelters location will be / is registered. Have you tried your cell phone from underground to see if you can call out? (This assumes that the cell system would still be functional in the aftermath of a major storm.) I don't even have the shelter in the ground (yet) but will try this out once in place. The seller of the unit said some have service and some don't depending on carrier and location. We do have a cell tower that was put up about 1/2 mile from the house, and I can see the tower from my back yard so hopefully the cell phone will work, but like you mentioned... (This assumes that the cell system would still be functional in the aftermath of a major storm.) Would it be appropriate to mount a battery powered strobe light on the top of the door (or highest point) that could be used if you are trapped inside by debris? I will be running 110 volts to the shelter to have a florescent light and a fan (until power goes out) and then battery operated radio and lights will be used. To mount a battery operated strobe light on top or highest point is a keen thought, however, I would think it might get smashed if a house, car or tree lands on it. I feel ok or safe with registering the shelter and if / when roads are cleared enough for fire/ police they can come look for us. I will also have w whistle if I can hear anyone looking for us. We plan to have an emergency kit (water, snacks, light foods, band-aids, blankets, batteries and such inside.. but look here...I truly don't ever want to have a NEED for the the darn thing anyway. That is why I said I am not to thrilled about shelling out over 5k just to throw in the ground......
