samklr650 Posted March 10, 2014 #1 Posted March 10, 2014 Since buying my "New to me" 2005 RSV I have run two tanks of fuel through it and the ODO reads around 380 +/- miles. I always run it down to reserve. According to the Owners Manual I have 5 gallons until I hit reserve, but everytime I fill up it only takes 4.5 gallons So I'm wondering how many gallons the rest of you burn before hitting reserve? My next question is, are you guys finding that the speedo is off on the RSV? I'm thinking mine might be a little optimistic. I usually have to turn it on reserve at about 175 miles. Is this about right?
ACE50 Posted March 10, 2014 #2 Posted March 10, 2014 Just check your MPG then times 6 (gals in tank) and that's your total miles you can go regardless of when you hit reserve. To me, reserve is just reminding you, hey, you need to get gas soon. When you hit reserve, just subtract from your total range and that will tell you how many miles you have left. And most speedo's are off by 10%.
bongobobny Posted March 10, 2014 #3 Posted March 10, 2014 Yup, what ACE said! Also, when filling, you will discover that when you are up at the top, if you wait a few seconds air bubbles will appear and the level will go down. If you take a punch and punch a couple of vent holes in the neck you can fill it up fuller faster...

IMO not a good idea.
Bubber Posted March 10, 2014 #5 Posted March 10, 2014 And most speedo's are off by 10%. According to the Wisconsin Troopers your speedometer are supposed to be no more than 5% off. Good luck with that, right?:rotf: Bubber
bongobobny Posted March 10, 2014 #6 Posted March 10, 2014 Actually, you are filling it up beyond what the tank calls for and minimizing the tank vent area. IMO not a good idea. Not really, it says 6 gal! The vent is at the very top of the tank. Many of us here on the site have done this mod with no ill effects. The opening of the gas tank is slightly below where the vent is... Edit: I notice you have an RSTD, the tank may be a little different...
ACE50 Posted March 10, 2014 #7 Posted March 10, 2014 I've had both and yes the RSTD is 5.3 gal. I know people do it, I'm not gonna. Every bike I've ridden has that lip in the gas tank. It's there to make sure you leave a vent area. You can do what you want.
djh3 Posted March 10, 2014 #8 Posted March 10, 2014 I have the extra holes at the top on mine. I will say I don't top it way up if I'm not riding on that tank of gas for awhile. So on a trip I take advantage of the extra holes if I'm going to the house I don't fill it up so much due to expansion. I typically on a trip am in that same 170 mile range. Usually 4.3 to 4.8 gallon's for a fill. Once I put a scary 5.3 or so I think. From most of what I have found out the book states 6.2 gal, but the usable is only about 5.8. Because there is trapped fuel on the right side that cant get over to the petcock and there is not a transfer tube/line like back in the olden days. My MPG on a trip running say north of 70 is about 35 with a best of 38. When I hit reserve I figure about 15 miles or so.
baylensman Posted March 11, 2014 #9 Posted March 11, 2014 Around 125 miles on my bike before I need to, hi the reserve. Most driving back and forth to work only 3.5 miles one way so its barely warm when I shut down. Can push it to 140 on a tank on the weekends if we do some cruisin

Is this about right? Fuel sounds about right. Your 6 gal tank will hold about 5.5 unless you punch the filler neck. Speedo error is about 7% Mike
Seaking Posted March 17, 2014 #11 Posted March 17, 2014 I did several fuel runs on my 2006 RSV after installing the VMax rear diff on the bike, I consistently hit reserve at around 175 miles and can get around another 50 miles to empty doing highway speeds of 70 mph. (Carried a 5L fuel jug for that purpose) The VMax diff makes the bike's mileage more consistant for me around here due to the hills and winds, it keeps the bike in the sweet spot for RPMs. Speedo is typically 10% slower indicated than actual speeds, so I use my GPS for highway speed metering when traveling. As with everything else, your mileage may differ..
