Brown Angel Posted March 2, 2014 #1 Posted March 2, 2014 Lori and I will be moving to Florida and getting all the details in order except that we are coming up to a real issue getting a trailer or truck to move us with out giving all money for doing it! Just looking for ways to go from Toledo Ohio to Fort Myers Florida by what ever means.. Best advise. WE have about two rooms worth of furniture and the bike and we drive a van with a hitch. Thanks:178:
pmelah Posted March 2, 2014 #2 Posted March 2, 2014 i have nothing what i do have would cost and that sounds like its not fesable for yall look on the bright side you can ride year round when you get to fort myers
Squidley Posted March 2, 2014 #3 Posted March 2, 2014 Angel, If you have a place that you are moving into down in Florida when you arrive, I would suggest PODS. We used it to move our entire house from Michigan to Houston. Lonna towed a 6x12 enclosed trailer behind her SUV with basically all my garage in it. I had a Caprice station wagon that was loaded with odds and ends and I towed the trailer with my bike at the time on it. It's not super cheap, but it was cheaper that renting a uhaul truck, getting a 3rd person to drive it and then fly them back to Michigan, and the fuel to get it here. The only other option is rent the truck put the trailer and bike on the back of your van. Wish I had some better advise, but there is not real cheap way out of it unfortunately :-/
IronMike Posted March 2, 2014 #4 Posted March 2, 2014 Try U Pack.com has a calculator, they drop the box you fill it and they meet you at your new place. Wherever it is, They drop, you unload.
Wade 2000 Posted March 2, 2014 #5 Posted March 2, 2014 You could try to find a good deal on a used trailer, use it to pull your stuff south, then sell it once you're down there. Maybe you make a few bucks, maybe you break even:mo money:
djh3 Posted March 2, 2014 #6 Posted March 2, 2014 First off welcome to the Sunshine State. Prime Beef is over that way in Ft Myers, I'm a couple hours towards the center of the state. Couple others on north side of Tampa bay. Thats off the top of my head. I moved here in 96 and had a U-haul 26' my wife in a van pulling a 16' utility trailer and my Bro-inlaw driving my pickup. Check with u-haul and see what price is. Sometimes you can get decent price if you drop to a place less folks are moving to. But the fuel is so dang high now that may be a wash to drive say 100-150 miles out of your way. I think the PODS or u-drop whatever they call them now is for a small houshold probably the way to go. Are you forking the cash to move or is someone else? Have you checked with a moving company? Depending on your packing skills even a 8x24 cargo trailer may not get your stuff all in it. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

ragtop69gs Posted March 2, 2014 #8 Posted March 2, 2014 Starting up a new jewelry store down there? We're going to miss our summertime rides with you & Lori ! Wish we were going too, but it's going to have to wait 2 more years. My son moved to North Carolina back in November and were still trying to figure the cheapest way to get his stuff down there.
djh3 Posted March 2, 2014 #9 Posted March 2, 2014 Angel Just noticed your an AF vet also. Thanks for your service also. Wheels are turning. Can you fit the furnature in say 22 ft of u-haul truck. Pack bike in back of truck and maybe put van on trailer? Unless its a mini van they get kind of picky about how big a vehicle goes on thier trailer. Then only have to buy fuel for one vehicle.
cowpuc Posted March 2, 2014 #10 Posted March 2, 2014 I have been watching bike sales out of Florida all winter and am SHOCKED at the extreme deals going on down there.. Unless your attached to your bike, you might consider selling it here and just buying another down there.. Or, wait a few more months and when the snows gone follow your wife down on the bike (being sarcastic - I am sooooo sick of winter).. Sounds like a fun move Angel, best of luck to the two of you!!!! Ditto on thanks for your service to our country!! Puc
Flyinfool Posted March 2, 2014 #11 Posted March 2, 2014 As mentioned, Thank you for your service. If you are creative in packing and realistic on what to put in the rummage sale, you would be surprised what will all fit into a trailer. I moved my sisters whole house of stuff in one trip with a big u-haul trailer and my pickup.
dacheedah Posted March 2, 2014 #12 Posted March 2, 2014 Packing a truck is about packing it tight like a puzzle. You should have that part down now though. Good luck with the move
bongobobny Posted March 2, 2014 #13 Posted March 2, 2014 My suggestion would be to sell everything and with the money you save buy new stuff when you get down there...
Evan Posted March 2, 2014 #15 Posted March 2, 2014 You could try to find a good deal on a used trailer, use it to pull your stuff south, then sell it once you're down there. Maybe you make a few bucks, maybe you break even That's what I did. Kept the trailer a few years to use for storage and then sold it for a bit more than I paid for it. My only caution would be that when fully loaded, it was a very heavy load to haul, which I could not have done without load levellers. Anyway Angel, good luck to you folks with your move. Hope it leads to good things for you.
Guest tx2sturgis Posted March 2, 2014 #16 Posted March 2, 2014 IronMike beat me to it, but I was going to mention uPack also. http://www.upack.com/moving-quotes/quote.asp?NLOView=2 They have a terminal in Toledo so as long as there is a terminal close to where you are moving, it might work for you. It's not cheap, but you can rent 1/2 or 1/3 of the trailer and move a BUNCH of stuff. They drop the trailer in your driveway. You have 3 days to load it, then the driver picks it up, and a few days to a week later its dropped at the destination's driveway or curbside. You dont have to drive it, pay for fuel, or insure it. All covered. They will respond normally within 24 hours if you submit a form requesting a quote.
