I've been looking at Helmet Head sets for my 2005 RSV. I came acrossed a J&M HS-8154B-OF on sale several places for around $68. Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm wondering just how well they work. I mainly just want to be able to talk to my wife.

 

The other question I have is how do I know it will fit the plug ins on my bike? Is the 5 pin standard or does the RSV have a special type plug in?

the five pin is standard, I also have the J&M don't remember the model but I like them.

Yea thats the model I have. They are OK. I personaly feel that if I turn it up enough to hear the wife then I have a bunch of background "woosh" Go to far and then you get intercom squeel. There are some better wired ones but the price goes up with quality. If you can get away with under $150 I would say OK. Bluetooth is probably the way to go, but on the RSV it presents problems adapting audio system. What I have done is installed a standard earphone plug and wired it in so I can hear better by running ear buds. The mic seems to work OK but the speakers on the J&M lack a little in clarity. Looks a little like this pic, but I found connectors so I can put it inline with audio under the faring.

Those are the same sets I am using. They are perfectly fine for talking. Maybe not as good as more expensive units for music but like you I'm using mine for communications. Talking to my navigator and talking on the CB to others in a group ride. Almost never listen to music so they are fine. The standard 5 pin is what the Ventures have, both 1st and 2nd Gens.

Making my 3.5mm earphone jack had 2 points. First it gave me a way to hear music better with the shorty I like wearing when solo. Alos gives better sound for music and I can hear the wife better with less noise. We also have a push button mic mute inline we use to turn off voice comm to cut down on all the "woosh"

Check out edsets. Go 3g forget the thunderclap speakers they are too loud. Just use earbuds in the ear bud jack.

 

Used them for 7k miles. They worked like they were made specifically for my bike, no bugs clitches or dissatisfaction in any way what so ever.

 

The Cb chimes in perfectly. The truck driuver coukd not even believe that was me talking at 70 mph. I was so quiet and clear. No harsh noises or hissing.

 

I think I have like $400 in the set. But I would buy them all over.

 

I also have a blue ant Bluetooth set. They also work perfect. Sometimes I use both sets using the edsets for cb music and com. While using the Blue Ant for talking on the phone, (I'm on call 24 7 so it gives me more riding time, ).

 

The drawback with non hard wired systems is the never ending chore of charging it up.

 

Go to edsets.com and read , only headset to go around the world no problems. Even if you doing buy them you can learn a lot of what to look for.

I just bought 2 of these exact headsets last week. After having to split my fairing and clean and then add Di-electric grease to all radio connections these headsets worked flawlessly for the wife and I today on our first ride using them. I give them a big thumbs up for price and workability.

I think it has to do with quality of the unit. I have the economy model that is quoted at $67. Works great for intercom, but for music it is marginal at best. The performance and elite series whould have better speakers and improved microphone.

The 8154-OF is the model of headsets that I have and my ONLY gripe about them is that the patch cable will only last me a few weeks before I have to have it replaced (the audio will start cutting in and out and it can be easily traced to continuity in the patch cable itself). So, I have had to buy one or two every two years (2 year warranty) and deal with the hassle of shipping the stupid cable back once a month (if I want a properly functioning headset, that is).

 

One of the replacements I had worked for about 4 months -- incidentally it was about 4 inches longer than any of the others I had ever received, so I guess that was just enough longer to put less stress on the weak points of the cable.

 

I will add that I use mine, quite literally, every day as my bike is my primary source of transportation, go to my office nearly every day, and I wear my helmet every time I am on my bike.

 

I think I paid $65 each plus 10ish for shipping when I bought mine a few years back. At the time, I thought it was far better than paying the couple hundred for ONE headset but I just don't know anymore. I may consider swapping out these for a set of edsets as they claim to have some strain relief built into the patch cable area, but maybe I expect to much out of a simple freaking patch cable...

By patch cable are you referring to the lower cable that plugs into the bike? When I first got the bike I noticed the coil cable would get to oscillating and wind would get it blowing around in circles and get bigger and more violent. I solved it by putting a simple clip for a security badge on it and clip it to my belt loop or jacket or whatever is close by.
