That was an interesting tidbit. Air gun back then I would haven't thought that possible. Lewis and Clark were amazing explorers. Read Dayton Duncan's book "OUT WEST" a lighter side of their adventures as seen through a VW microbus driven by an out of work English professor. He follows their path and tells us what one would see now. Awesome collararies and hilarious.

I saw a couple of those air rifles in Austrian Museums.

 

When Napoleon's armies invaded Austria, the Tyrol in the west of Austria (mountainous) refused to surrender and a militia fought back under the leadership of an innkeeper named Andreas Hofer. They had a number of those air rifles.

 

Napoleon decreed that anyone caught with one of the air rifles would be immediately hung.

 

Hofer was eventually caught and executed, following the surrender of the regular Austrian army.
