Mad Dog Posted February 24, 2014 #1 Posted February 24, 2014 Hi all, Has anyone used the Ram Mount X-Grip? I had one ordered and then found a few reviews that said it rotated pretty freely around the axis where the arms attached - not at the ball itself. Cancelled my order... but it's what I want... Soooo. any opinions? or were the reviewers mistaken? bad installs etc... http://www.amazon.com/RAM-Universal-X-Grip-Holder-1-Inch/product-reviews/B0055PH0XA/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?showViewpoints=1 TIA
awsmsrv Posted February 24, 2014 #2 Posted February 24, 2014 I read a lot of those reviews & most had no issues. Sounds to me as though the ones who did have an issue may not have adjusted it tightly enough. If I were you, I'd go for it, since you did say it's what you want.
gez Posted February 24, 2014 #3 Posted February 24, 2014 I've been using one for about a year now. I have no issues at all with the product. It does rotate a bit, I wouldn't exactly call it freely. I find it stays where I put it. I also use it for my GPS. I would definitely purchase another if mine went missing.
Mad Dog Posted February 25, 2014 Author #4 Posted February 25, 2014 I wrote to Ram today... let's see what they say. Probably ordering anyway. Thanks
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 25, 2014 #5 Posted February 25, 2014 You gonna hang an expensive smartphone in that? On a motorcycle? I think its designed for cars... Maybe your phone or GPS or whatever has a RAM cradle made specifically for it. If so, thats the one I would use. If not, this RAM mount is the bees knees: [ame] [/ame]

Maybe I can cut it a bit..... Thanks for the input.... back to the drawing board!
uncledj Posted February 25, 2014 #7 Posted February 25, 2014 On the Universal Finger Grip shown in the video, it just shows the phone holder and not how it'd attach to the bike. I'd like to attach a smart phone to my new to me 06 RSV. What's the best way to mount such a holder...???

I'm new to this system too, but with a little bit of research you can find something that will suit your needs. The RAM system is modular, so you order the parts you need for what your trying to do...so if you order the universal grip, a RAM ball for it, then a 3 or 4 inch arm and RAM ball mount for your handlebars, you're all set. http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045066045049052057090045085078052085/Default.aspx I use that exact piece in my semi (with a windshield suction mount) and its VERY sturdy....assuming your device will fit in it, (measure it!) you wont lose it from the mount! Maybe I can cut it a bit..... Thanks for the input.... back to the drawing board! The bottom and top U-shaped pieces wont block the port if its in the middle of the bottom or top edge. It might block the port if its offset..but as you said, maybe you could modify the mount slightly. Depending on the size of the device, you might be able to offset the grip 'fingers' so that you get the clearance you need.

Yeah... its an iPhone, so the power is in the middle bottom and the audio plug is on the left bottom, about halfway between the corner and the power port. I cut the holder I use in my car (different brand - junk actually) and it's fine. This will be even better. Thanks

Thanks RAM makes iPhone mounts, but the ones I have seen dont work well with a case like an otterbox or whatever kind you might be using. If the case is not too large, the universal mount should work fine. It works on my Nexus 5 with a case, and that phone is already a bit larger than the iPhone. The X-Grip just looks too flimsy. And it seems to leave the phone likely to slip out on rough roads. But then they DO warn you to use some sort of security lanyard with any of the mounts. You wont need it with the universal grip. Its a good one. Edited February 25, 2014 by tx2sturgis

Lots of riders want to take their smartphones along for the ride now. I suppose I would owe at least that to you guys... along with the $12 fee! I haven't even picked up my Venture yet (4/5 is the date unless it warms up sooner) and this board has helped me a ton!
Mad Dog Posted February 26, 2014 Author #16 Posted February 26, 2014 As I think I mentioned above I wrote to Ram Mount to ask about this. I thought I'd share their reply. Thanks to all who helped me out! ========================================== Hi Mike, Thanks for your e-mail. Unfortunately, this review is true and, no, we have not updated the design since it was made. The reason these mounts rotate is that the X-Grip mounts are universal and designed to hold a device larger than the one the reviewer is using. In other words, the closer to the maximum width of the X-Grip your device is, the less it will rotate. We have explored solutions for this, however, most would limit the universality of the mount or be prohibitively expensive. We have come up with a fix that works quite well; however, its not the most elegant solutions: if you break off a section of Popsicle stick slightly shorter than the distance the arms of the X-Grip rotate and place this section between one arm and the body of the X-Grip you can limit the movement of the arms and eliminate the rotation issue. Thanks for your interest in RAM Mounts and please let me know if there are any other questions I can help with. Best regards, Reid Mortimer National Products, Inc | RAM Mounting Systems
Guest tx2sturgis Posted February 26, 2014 #17 Posted February 26, 2014 Popsicle stick? So we're supposed to go buy a package of popsicles? The guy should have directed you to another RAM mounting solution, not the freezer section at your local grocery! Jeeze. Hopefully that is a new guy, and I can tell you the RAM stuff is good, even if the rep doesnt know much about it.
stanG Posted March 21, 2014 #18 Posted March 21, 2014 I have been using the RAM X Grip for a couple years with no issues. There is just a little play in the rotation after you snap your device into it. I would say less than 10 degrees but while riding I've not seen it move even when riding rough roads.
