Donvito Posted February 16, 2014 #1 Posted February 16, 2014 Now that all my major problems are fixed with your help, I thought I would try to get my intercom working again. I have an 87 VR with two 20 plus year old J & M headsets. Both headsets ear phones work and music from the radio or cassette works fine. Only the intercom doesn't work. I have tried switching them to the other plug with no help. Because both sets of earphones work, I am assuming it isn't a problem with the headsets but I may be wrong. Anyone have any advice? I have had both top fairing top covers off recently to replace the speakers which work fine also so not sure if I could have dislodged something. Thanks.

Mike Not quite. The rider controls the maximum volume of all the sources. The ATT knobs allow either the rider or passenger to reduce individual headset volume from those levels.

When I adjust the volume with the radio off, I can hear a hum through the headsets which gets louder as I adjust it. BTW the CB also works through the earphones. The music will turn off when I adjust the squelch like it should.
Donvito Posted February 16, 2014 Author #11 Posted February 16, 2014 Maybe it is the microphones. I don't see a way to open the casing to get to the microphones. I'll try to find someone with working headsets. Anyone in Florida with a set? Are any other bikes compatible with our system? Thanks.

I believe the drivers is on the other side of the of the left hand controls facing the front of the bike and the riders is on the remote control unit. You hadnt mention pushing these and thought I would just throw it out there. Hope you get it working, Rick F.

No, adjusted properly, the First Gen intercom utilizes a VOX (voice activated) microphone. Simply speak, and the passenger and operator microphones are activated. A nice plus for the First Gen over the second Generation. You do have to use the PTT button to speak on the CB.

It is located on the amplifier controller to the right of the AUTO knob. Could this be your issue? It might be defective and not letting the intercom function properly or is it covered with something, that is not letting it work properly. I am reading in the service manual on pages 7-105 and 7-106 if that helps you any. I would also try using the mic with the CB just to make sure the mics are working properly. You should be able to find someone to give you a check when you transmit out.. Hope that helps some.. Good luck Rick F.
