Change the plugs in my "06" today and I notice the area around the carbs on the left side (on/off fuel valve side) had alot of oily film, that plastic box that sits on top of the carbs, I removed the top was the same, on the left oily and normal on the right. Don't know what to make of that? Any ideas? Some kind of blow by????

What do I think?

Well lets see, my Gen 1 has similar issue.

It actually seeps, and mostly on the left side, ever so slightly out of the boot onto the top of the carb.

Some of it is blow by, I am sure, and is acceptable to a point, but I also use oil in the filter, so never sure which it is.

Bike doesnt use oil or smoke, and runs hard, so I kind of live without knowing which it really is.

Not much help but thats what I think!

We have same problem on 1st gens, mostly caused by to much oil in the crankcase. The 'case vent will draw extra oil up through breather tube to the air box, where it seems to want to set on the left side of the box. Oil being the slippery devil it is, will seep out of the boots on the left side and drench the tops of your carbs. One place to start.

Good luck, Dan

I agree with Dan, check your oil level and if it's more than half way in the window take a little out

That's normal for the 2nd gen also. My 99 and 06 had oil in the box on the left side. Has something to do with the crankcase reventilation which feeds crankcase gas (an oil) into the carbs for burn/reburn. I'm not real good on the technical explanation but I had oil on the left carbs and airbox of both my RSVs.

Again this forum comes thru, thanks guys. I did not know what it could have been. Feel better now after reading the reply's. I will check that oil level and be sure it's at half. And keep an eye on the level after future oil changes. When I change the oil I use a gallon container and use all but about a 1/4" or so that I leave in the container. I probably put in to much on my last oil change. As I said I will keep on eye on the level in the future.

Thanks again
