cappyc67 Posted February 3, 2014 #1 Posted February 3, 2014 Good Afternoon I have a question i have an 09 RSV which just hit 10,000 miles i am the second owner and have a question about rear tire wear. I have included a picture of the rear tire. My rear is an Avon Venom is this normal wear I ride 2 up and keep the pressure @ 41 psi. I had a friend check with a tread depth guage tell me the tread depth was fine. Any input would be appreciated.
cecdoo Posted February 3, 2014 #2 Posted February 3, 2014 Looks normal to me, I would measure tread depth at one of the bars that crosses the whole tire. I can get 15K miles out of a rear Venom I am on my 3rd set. One thing when they get low on tread they wear out quickly. There isnt another quarter inch of rubber after the tread is gone. Sure you will get other opinions. Craig
RedRider Posted February 4, 2014 #3 Posted February 4, 2014 I got 16k out of the last Avon on my RSV. Recommend finding some curves to round out the profile a bit though.
djh3 Posted February 4, 2014 #4 Posted February 4, 2014 Whats the chink there about 3 o'clock in the pic? Looks a bit "square" bu so does my Michlien. Happens when your mostly on highways.
Mike G in SC Posted February 4, 2014 #5 Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) The bike did not come with Avon's, so at 10k miles on the ODO, this would be 2nd rear tire. How many miles on the tires? Is the front Avon too? And as noted, tire looks like flat wear,, no wear on sides. Oh,,,,, you're in Florida,,, yeah,,, head north. When you get flat wear, they will not be comfortable at low speed turns as the wear further. Might up the pressure. I usually got 13-15K miles on Avon rear. DJH3, If I remember, the chink may be a logo mark. Seems like I remember Venoms having them (?). (change your window zoom to, like 300.) I see you are FL too. Edited February 4, 2014 by Mike G in SC
djh3 Posted February 4, 2014 #6 Posted February 4, 2014 Yup Mike, I'm in central Fl. Our idea of twisties is an on ramp for I-75. I'm almost dead center of the state. You say its a logo? Seems odd place for it.

Craig Agree with the above comment, I had Venoms on my 02 and the rear got to wear your tire in the picture was at, it was only a month or so later that I had to replace it.
stickhandle2 Posted February 4, 2014 #8 Posted February 4, 2014 The mark in the picture at about 3 o'clock is an emblem on the tire.
KAWoodworth Posted February 4, 2014 #9 Posted February 4, 2014 I think 41 pounds in the rear riding two up is a little low. I run 45 single and I've heard almost 50 pounds loaded with two up. Maybe someone else can chime in on the rear tire pressure.

Seems odd place for it. Dion, Yeah,, Logo. Look at the link page to Avon. http://www.avonmotorcycle.com/ About an inch down the banner changes pictures. Look at the one that shows top half of an "AVON AV60". It has a snake head logo near top, on tire surface. Mike
aharbi Posted February 4, 2014 #12 Posted February 4, 2014 I run 50psi in mine. Good even wear, no problems. Oh I ride two-up most of the time. And we are both... ah... well nourished :-)
IronMike Posted February 5, 2014 #13 Posted February 5, 2014 I had two sets of these a while back, the sides right around the rim cracked within six months, be on the look out for that. I took them off soon as i seen the cracks and AVON never contacted me back, then I heard they were doing warranty on them for cracks, AFTER I tossed mine! But anyways, as they wear down the groove gets shorter at the middle of the tread end. You'll get a flat spot in the middle and still look great as the tread gets towards the sides. Loved the tire in the rain, Hated that it cracked around the rim.
