Yammer Dan Posted February 2, 2014 #1 Posted February 2, 2014 (edited) With temps at about 5 degrees below zero I took trip to garage. "Brown Sugar" fired right up. Honda 4-wheeler fired right up. 2nd Gen said "Come back when you are serious" Cranked but didn't seem to hit? Gonna try again today. Battery seems OK just not firing. Spot of water somewhere?? I have had trouble getting used to firing this thing up. Flooded it several times?? To start I pull choke all the way out and crank? Then close choke as it warms up? I know most of this is just not being used to it but it is stubborn. It just don't seem to be as ready to go as "Brown Sugar" QUESTION WAS ANYTHING SPECIAL TO STARTING THESE THINGS?? steamer Posted February 2, 2014 #2 Posted February 2, 2014 Unlike 1st gen's 2nd gen's need to be rid'n. They don't like to sit around and collect dust.
93 venture Posted February 2, 2014 #3 Posted February 2, 2014 Same problem i had a few weeks ago, the 93 fired right up, and the 99 was turning over, but i think it was turning to slow to fire up, i put my jump box on it, and it fired on the 2nd turn. Must be a 2nd gen thing, them guys dont talk about.
bongobobny Posted February 2, 2014 #4 Posted February 2, 2014 Just full choke, leave the throttle alone, and fire...
Yammer Dan Posted February 2, 2014 Author #5 Posted February 2, 2014 Just full choke, leave the throttle alone, and fire... That didn't work and it was cranking plenty fast I think.
MikeWa Posted February 2, 2014 #6 Posted February 2, 2014 I have never needed full choke on mine. I usually pull the choke all the way out then push it back in to about half way. Then crank. My guess has always been that to much choke can cause it to flood which is death on a very cold day. As far as I know these bikes do not have a choke unloader so once flooded it is choke off, open throttle and hope. Mike
pmelah Posted February 2, 2014 #7 Posted February 2, 2014 brown sugar sabotored it before you came out to the garage she seen you comin and flooded the carbs on the 2nd gen:stirthepot: :whistling:yea thats it :rotf::rotf:hey sounds like a plausable idea :rotf:
Yama Mama Posted February 2, 2014 #8 Posted February 2, 2014 I think your 99 is just not used to PMS. I would wipe the dust off of her and tell her you really did not mean all the mean things you said about her in the past. That always gets my motor started. Yama Mama:smile5:

Yama Mama:smile5: No No No,, don't do that,,,,,,,,,, it may get too hot for a second gen!!!!
bongobobny Posted February 2, 2014 #10 Posted February 2, 2014 Awww, Carl, we just got her calmed down from chat the other nite and there ya go stirring things up again...
Yammer Dan Posted February 2, 2014 Author #11 Posted February 2, 2014 Tried today with choke off choke on til battery started to go. Guess I'll build a fire under it.... I think it has some ice. Can't hear pump.
Marcarl Posted February 2, 2014 #12 Posted February 2, 2014 Tried today with choke off choke on til battery started to go. Guess I'll build a fire under it.... I think it has some ice. Can't hear pump. Through in some Methyl Hydrate, wait for 2 hours and try again, may have to wait the second time for the fuel to work it's way past the pump.
Marcarl Posted February 2, 2014 #13 Posted February 2, 2014 Awww, Carl, we just got her calmed down from chat the other nite and there ya go stirring things up again... Why???? was it Hot in chat????
Bert2006 Posted February 2, 2014 #14 Posted February 2, 2014 If no clicking sound, pump may be gone. I always try without choke first and then half choke and it usually starts. Ok, now for the embarassing question....is the petcock on the on position?
cowpuc Posted February 2, 2014 #15 Posted February 2, 2014 Never worked on a 2nd Gen so I am not sure what plugs are in em BUT the 1st gens use that little "D" plug.. The smaller plugs seem to foul easier than the larger "E" plugs that a lot of other bikes/snowmobiles and stuff use... If its actually been flooded out or over choked it may be time for a new set of plugs... Think thats bad, the little Honda's - Ct70's, 90's, Z50's take a smaller plug yet and they are horrible when it comes to blackened plugs... So,, if it were mine,,, I would pull the plugs, make sure the kill switch is off, crank er over a few times to get some air in there,, stick in some new plugs and try er again..

Ok, now for the embarassing question....is the petcock on the on position? Humm On a 1st Gen you just turn it on reserve and forget it!! Back to the garage!!!:bang head: YEP!! Bert wins the right to be the first one to call me a dumbass this time!! The rest of you will just have to wait til next time....
rickardracing Posted February 2, 2014 #17 Posted February 2, 2014 My second gen sits from November until April o a battery tender. I just turn on the fuel, choke it and crank it. It usually fires right up.
Flyinfool Posted February 2, 2014 #18 Posted February 2, 2014 Humm On a 1st Gen you just turn it on reserve and forget it!! Back to the garage!!!:bang head: YEP!! WildBill1 Posted February 2, 2014 #19 Posted February 2, 2014 In case you havn't found out by now, 2nd Gen. bikes only take so much verbal abuse before they tend to get even. Must be Carma, just keep the Seafoam handy and turn the Radio up little to drown out any odd sounds from below.
Kirby Posted February 2, 2014 #20 Posted February 2, 2014 Humm On a 1st Gen you just turn it on reserve and forget it!! Back to the garage!!!:bang head: YEP!! Bert wins the right to be the first one to call me a dumbass this time!! The rest of you will just have to wait til next time.... Hey Dan just go ahead and turn that sucker to reserve and leave it there, I do mine. Give it full choke when the temps are below 50 degrees and hit the starter. It'll run at high idle until you ease it back. Don't touch the throttle until you get ready to go into gear. Works for me every day.
CaptainJoe Posted February 2, 2014 #21 Posted February 2, 2014 (edited) If you parked it 2 months ago with 87 ethanol gas in it, it's not even close that octane now... dump it out and get some fresh stuff If your going to ride it infrequently, better to use recreational fuel in her... IMHO To start on a cold engine: open petcock, full choke, crank till it starts, DO NOT TOUCH THROTTLE! after about a minute, close choke and rev to your hearts content I always turn pet cock off at the end of the day and place in reserve position when starting. CaptainJoe Posted February 3, 2014 #25 Posted February 3, 2014 Don't worry about it Dan. Back in high school a couple of my friends turned my petcock off on my 175 yamaha Enduro. I got clear out to interstate "81" and it took me 15 -20 min to figure it out. You see, I never turned mine off, so, i didn't even consider the possibility..
