jimmyenglish Posted January 24, 2014 #1 Posted January 24, 2014 Hi gang! Rear brake is dragging on my 86. Bled it out today, going to rebuild cylinder (since it's almost 30 yrs old but seems ok) but the caliper seems to be clearly dragging. De linked a couple years ago (best mod I've done on this bike). Question is, should I bother rebuilding it or just get a used one? Bought the r6 calipers for the front couple years ago and they totally rock. Is there an aftermarket caliper for this bike? What other bikes rebuild kit could I use?
mother Posted January 24, 2014 #2 Posted January 24, 2014 i put r-1 calipers on all 3 spots on my 86 drops right in place on the rear.
MiCarl Posted January 24, 2014 #3 Posted January 24, 2014 Unless you're different than the rest of us, the pad backing plates have worn ruts in the front of the caliper. When I rebuilt mine I split the halves and had a welder fill the ruts.
jimmyenglish Posted January 25, 2014 Author #4 Posted January 25, 2014 Thanks for the replies. So perhaps a stupid question: which r1 caliper for the rear? Looking at pictures it seems like a front left would fit but not a rear r1 on the venture. Is that right? Thanks again.

jimmyenglish Posted January 25, 2014 Author #6 Posted January 25, 2014 Super. One more question: is the brake line length the same for the r1 caliper? I have an aftermarket stainless with a wee bit of wiggle room but it looks like the connector on the caliper is a little farther away.
mother Posted January 25, 2014 #7 Posted January 25, 2014 i have not done the braided lines yet, but my stock line was no problem. if you line is clamped down, maybe remove whatever bracket or tie downs to get a little extra if needed. please make sure to refasten the brake line when done and make sure it is kept away from the rear shock. ( i learned the hard way on that one ) cheers, Scott
jasonm. Posted January 25, 2014 #8 Posted January 25, 2014 Thanks for the replies. So perhaps a stupid question: which r1 caliper for the rear? Looking at pictures it seems like a front left would fit but not a rear r1 on the venture. Is that right? Thanks again. look at the location of the bleeder. I believe left front is simply rotated 180 and is used at the rear on the venture. so my answer is L-F. Correct me if I am wrong
jasonm. Posted April 15, 2014 #9 Posted April 15, 2014 I am having the "RUTT" problem. I just looked and an R1 caliper that will fit . But the correct caliper is R-F, for the rear. So it follows the rotor . Just the bleeder will not be ideal placement, requiring removal for bleeding. Would need pics no prove me wrong..
