This weekend I saw - and rode- a 2009 RSTD that had external, round air-cleaners mounted to both sides where the stock air cleaners go??!?!? It looked really good! I have never seen this before and I am wondering if there is a reason. Good, not good??? Aesthetically I WANT TO DO IT! I appreciate your knowledge and feedback!

Hey, if it lets in more air, that's a plus. I just opened the opening to the stock ones and noticed a difference. Aesthetically it might look better too!

Aesthetically it might look better too! I'm not sure how critical air volumn is to the 2nd gens but on the 1st Gen if you did that it would run like crap.

Larger slow jets took care of that. Some people think just opening the air box will help but you have to balance it out somewhere, usually larger jets to match.

IronMike Posted January 24, 2014 #12 Posted January 24, 2014 Pics are in the link posted. I have done this Mod on my 07 RoadStar. Had to re jet went about 25k like this. Then one day in a torrential downpour I had to mount my bike. I took the cover off and by time I got on the air cleaner was soaked with water. So much so I was starving for air and had only about 1\8 throttle and it was bogging out bad. I barely made it home. Fifty mile trip. That was the end of it for me. There was a few times after that I was glad I went back to the factory box as boring as it looked and as much as it sticks out. I love the look of the aftermarket AC's on both bikes. But the swamp out cured me. I even had a plastic box that went over my K&N on my Roadstar but still when the bike is parked its subject to soaking. Looks like the only drawback though.

The BAK came with a "raincoat" to put on in rain. I often just left it on. Ran same with it. And then, yep, had to ride through a white squall around Chattanooga. It was all I could do to keep it running on the interstate. When I got to my stop, it took quite a while and an old school rider to make it run again. It dried out on the trip back to SC. Never had the a rain problem with leaving the stock boxes on my Royals.

If the rain is not a downpour, it did okay. But Those times you are just SOL and have to ride and flat interstate is flooded and your tires are pearling like a surfboard,,,,, not so good. The "raincoat" is a plastic membrane with elastic,, like a shower cap with a bunch of tiny holes. Never have problems with the standard RSV and RSTD. But looking at the pics, the intake is still behind the RSV cowling,,, may give it some protection.
