cowpuc Posted January 18, 2014 #1 Posted January 18, 2014 Watching the trailer for Why We Ride got me going, the comment was made - "it gets in your blood" and BROTHER can I relate to that.. It started for me in Kindergarten, drawing pics of choppers (and I still remember getting punished for it).. 1st pic is of me with my first bike, 59 Allstate Moped (and my bonanza mini), second one is my High School Graduation picture - sure took it on the chin for that too, hey,, instructions said - submit one of you, well groomed, professionally dressed.. Sure looked,, alone - but at my best,, with all those suits and ties in the yearbook, Mom about killed me.. Worked in many bike shops, had my own shop for years, owned/built/rode 100's of bikes from Choppers to minibikes and gotta say, since day one of my first bike that "feeling" mentioned in the trailer has been there with all of them and still is.. Oh yea, NO SHOW in our area of Why We Ride BUT I am getting a copy to put right next to "On Any Sunday"...
Guest tx2sturgis Posted January 18, 2014 #2 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) I am getting a copy to put right next to "On Any Sunday"... Its not very often my threads generate other threads!! When I was about 13, I saw 'On Any Sunday', and it also lit a fire under me. I've been riding since I was a kid. I love it. Oh...BTW...at about the 39 second mark, this scene pops up...you just never know where you will see a Ural! Edited January 18, 2014 by tx2sturgis

When you watch the movie "ON ANY Sunday" and you get to the part about Steve McQueen racing at Saddleback Park, watch for a guy wearing a bright blue racing jersey with a large white CZ on the front. That will be me. I was on the starting line with McQueen that day. I placed ninth. Don't know where McQueen placed but somewhere back there. That was one of the events that was part of the Trans AMA race series.

It was a scene when he jumped the barb wire fence with a dirt bike to escape the Germans. I had the fortune to meet the man that actually did it, he was at the Yacht club at Tyndall AFB when I met him, what a set of brass, well you get the idea. Jim

Indeed I get the point! It is amazing the people ya run into! One of the riders I had the honor to ride with at the dalles is riding a bike that was owned by the father of a Star Trek movie star.. his trunk is signed internally by that star! I told tippy after he showed us the signature that I am always AMAZED at people who we run across who have rubbed shoulders with the famous! I wont mention the VR members name who owns the bike, that would be his job, but will say,, in my eyes he is a star too! Yea,, dont I wish it was me who rode with brother steve jim!!! That was keysriders post.. I LOVE the part in that movie you are referring to too! I think that movie is titled THE GREAT ESCAPE, if memory serves me correctly. It also stars James Garne, garner trys to fly I plane out with a blind guy but doesnt make it out either,, GOOD SHOW! I do ave my name on a plaque in the ohio motorcycle hall of fame with an elderly gentleman whos name is ted del solar. Ted is in his mid 80, s and we are very close friends. He has been an enduro racer formany many years and has been written about in several nation dirtbike rags thru the years. Ted has also been a member of THE PENTON OWNERS GROUP, or POG, for many years too. He is a very close friend of John Penton, Founder of Penton Motorcycles which is now KTM Motorcycles. I got invited to speak at a POG/KTM expo in Amhearst Ohio, KTM headquarters, several years ago, rubbed shoulders with John and the wigs from KTM.. Ted and many of those heros from yesteryear had ridden ridden with the likes of Mc Queen, Malcom Smith and Youngblood back in the days when plunger frame bikes were dirtbikes,, unfortunatelly I am to young to have had the honor to have ridden with those older heros of the dirt. Sure remember reading about em when I was a kid in the 60, s riding my bicyclee to the triumph/bsa/harley/ossa/bultaco/ducati shops and drueling over anything with a motor.. cut my racin teeth on afirst year yam dt 250,,, I missed all the really good stuff......l Edited June 26, 2014 by cowpuc
Brake Pad Posted June 26, 2014 #8 Posted June 26, 2014 I had toy motorcycles as a kid, and I Reid " On to the road" & the art of motorcycle macanics I've been into bikes from the age or seven Back then it's was about who's colors you who're, then I started to love motocamping, then touring a hint of speed ( Honda CBX ) 147 mph lost my license for two years, came back to touring when I got it back. Now I roll slow and enjoy my time in the saddle, and the last Seven Years, it's been about the people here.
Carbon_One Posted June 26, 2014 #9 Posted June 26, 2014 Cool stories for all posters so far. Nothing colorful from me thou. Went from a Allstate scooter at age 15 to Harley Sportsters into my late 20's with a few Honda's, BSA and a VW trike in between them. Raised our family and then came back into biking in 2001 getting a new Volusia at the time, From there to my 05 Midnight and now 09 RSV/Hannigan trike. Oh and my 83 I picked up about 4 years ago. Still in the process of getting that baby road worthy. Anyhow thanks for sharing your stories guys. Larry
JohnT Posted June 26, 2014 #10 Posted June 26, 2014 I loved bikes from the time I was a kid. Mom and Dad said no way. (probably how I got to live to 21) I used to trade off my cars to ride a friends motorcycle till I got married. My bride said I could dump our wedding card money into our first motorcycle. Many many bikes later, damn right I still have the same bride. I went through all the phases. Street, dirt, enduro, crotch rocket, UJM super bikes, and now to bagger. Crashed a few, got really lucky one time, then seemed to have settled down. Some. I'll ride till I see God. And I just know there are motorcycles in heaven. Have to see this film.

You to make motor noises and sit until I saw my mother walking towards me, OH OH. All that make believe riding and never had to put gas in them? I have not rode with anybody famous, but for harley riders, Pete Hill has a shop down the road, I think he may hold the speed record on a Knuckle Head. My bike history consist of Harley Sport, Low Rider, Bultaco,Norten 750, Kawy 900, Suzuki 1500, Honda Goldwing,RSV, and a purple chopper with a 5hp engine. May have left one out, senior moment. Well my brother if all goes well, wife retires in April next year and are gearing up to do some country camping, already have a trailer. You and Tippy are my heroes, enjoy this beautiful country on a wing and a prayer ( heavy on the prayer part ) Take care and GOD Bless, Jim

You and Tippy are my heroes, enjoy this beautiful country on a wing and a prayer ( heavy on the prayer part ) Take care and GOD Bless, Jim Wow jim,, thank you for the kind words and encouragement! They are always appreciated.. I gotta say here brother, having a best friend like tippy to share life with COMBINED with a world full of great people like yourself that are waiting to be befriended is like a pot of gold to me! An endless endeavor of loving life.. I am very excited for what is coming at you and your bride and wish you nothing but the best as you folks pursue your dreams.. We had a remarkable thing happen on our recent trip up to mt st helens with a now, best friend for life, cmcoffey shortly after leaving the campsite at mamaloose, which I called mamath moose, campground. As we rode toward st helens in the cold and rain a complete rainbow appeared over the columbia river with one end precisely placed on the highway in front of us, it was breathtaking to say the least! As tech sargent coffey passed thru the rainbow it occurred to me that there really is a pot of gold there.. we later joked about the gold not being there but to me, it was.. remember when your chasing those dreams that its really not about what bike ya ride or how cool it looks to others but about what makes for great memories for the two of you! On a more guy to guy bike lovers note.. something I would like to share with you.. seems how it sounds like we haveva very simular childhood history.. had a piece of steel destroy a new tire on a highway south of johnson city tennessee 3 years ago. Had tippy, fully loaded and tweeks was a handful to ride down.. guy behind us watched it all, stopped to offer help, to us to jims, cycleshop in johnson city. He told the head guy there about watching us, the guy asked about us, told him some of the same stuff you just wrote.. he invited me upstairs to see something i would really appreciate.. the upstairs was thebsame size as the downstairs showroom and shop combined.. after veiwing, and seeing the excitement in my eyes hebtossed me a free jims shirt and thanks for sharing the passion. I wont tell you what i saw up there causebi dont ruin the show for brothers BUT, i will say this. Being as close to johnson city as you are, it would be a great primer for your future endeavors! another one is the curtis museum in new york. A hands on place that kids like you and me can now go and actually touch and play with the machines that started it all.. after getting primed, your wife gets retired and cha hit the highway,, sing the THEN CAME BRONSON THEME and KNOW ol pucs singing right along with ya brother.. Goin down that long lonesome highway,, bound for da mountains n da plains,,,,,,,,,,, puc
