ReinyRooster Posted January 16, 2014 #1 Posted January 16, 2014 Will be in Florida in about 2 1/2 weeks and am hoping to get some wild pig hunting in. The boar I shot last year was not worth the cost and time to butcher and ship back up to the Great White North, but I'm hoping to harvest something better this time. Wondering if anyone has any experience or connections in transporting/shipping that could offer some advice or assistance in getting that meat home. Thanks.
djh3 Posted January 16, 2014 #2 Posted January 16, 2014 OH my!!! All I am trying to do is ship a few small relays for an igntion by-pass and its going to cost me over $30 for a $20 part. With it being meat I'll bet it will have to go thru some kind of agraculture inspection.
cowpuc Posted January 16, 2014 #3 Posted January 16, 2014 A buddy sent me some Moose and Caribou once from AK, put the meat in big freezer bags, froze it, bought a sheet of styro insulation - lined the inside of a box with the styro and packed it in tight with newspaper.. Took well over a week to get here in Michigan and was in great shape when it got here... He used those Flat Rate boxes from USPS... Sounds like you are headed for a LOT of fun Reiny, be safe down there and watch out for snakes, gators, spiders and wild biker chicks :rotf:
ReinyRooster Posted January 16, 2014 Author #4 Posted January 16, 2014 That's partially why I'm looking for someone with an "in" somewhere......I wouldn't be shipping the entire pig.....just the good parts! Wild biker chicks, you say?? Hmmmmm.......

Wild biker chicks, you say?? Hmmmmm....... Just make sure all of your guns are properly prepared....... How are you getting down there. If you are driving then build a styro box in the back of your vehicle for the meat, have it frozen to start and add dry ice as required along the way to keep it frozen. If you have to ship it, a syro lined box and dry ice will keep things cool, you may want to consider a faster shipping method like 2nd day or third day. I would also check with your government to see if there are any issues with bringing the meat over the boarder. I do not know about wild boar but I know there are a bunch of rules for deer just to cross state lines in the USA.
ReinyRooster Posted January 16, 2014 Author #6 Posted January 16, 2014 We are flying in. I am in the process of checking with the Canadian Border Services to see what they say. I'm flying from Buffalo so I'm thinking I might ship it to my cousin who is about one hour from there....he can keep if frozen for me and then when I land I can pick it up from there and take it the rest of the way in my vehicle. I guess it all hinges on what the border people have to say.

djh3 Posted January 17, 2014 #8 Posted January 17, 2014 Red Rider: I'm trying to ship a harness kit to some folks up that way. Its a plug and play unit based on Carbonone ignition by-pass realy mod. I have no problem getting parts, its shipping up there.

djh3 Posted January 17, 2014 #10 Posted January 17, 2014 No problem. I'm thinking if you got it frozen at someones house on this side and drive across you may have a shot at it. Whats the worse that can happen, the Canadian boarder gaurd asks "whats in the cooler?" and you tell him, "the last boarder gaurd that asked me stupid questions"
ReinyRooster Posted January 17, 2014 Author #11 Posted January 17, 2014 I spoke with the Canadian Border Service yesterday and was quite surprised....it would actually be more of a hassle if I was hunting with a proper hunting licence and tag.....since I'm hunting the problematic wild hog and am on private property, I do not require a licence. The meat will be butchered, deboned and wrapped and frozen. The Border Service compares it to me crossing the border and going to the butcher....the limit if 20kgs (44lbs) per person so I just need to find the cheapest shipping method from Florida to NY State and I'll pick it up there when I leave the airport. Looking forward to it.

Ok I don't understand why you're having problems shipping your harnesses into Canada. I ship my horn harness there with minimal costs and never have had a problem with the border folks. I use USPS exclusively, mark the form as a gift, along with the description of the mailer contents. Costs are generally somewhere between $3-$5 if I recall. Larry
djh3 Posted January 17, 2014 #13 Posted January 17, 2014 Reiny @ 44lb ea thats a pretty sizable hog dressed. Between you and the Mrs you could probably make that.
ReinyRooster Posted January 17, 2014 Author #14 Posted January 17, 2014 And there's no saying I have to get that all from just one hog. I feel it's my civic duty to assist in keeping the hog population in check....
Marcarl Posted January 18, 2014 #15 Posted January 18, 2014 So where is it going once you get it across the border??? huh????
ReinyRooster Posted January 18, 2014 Author #16 Posted January 18, 2014 Well Carl.....it will hibernate in my freezer.......but I'm thinking some might just make it's way to the next Venture gathering BBQ that you host this summer!
