hell yea Posted January 11, 2014 #1 Posted January 11, 2014 well i finale did it and it worked a treat lots of frustration and swearing trying to get that engine out than back in made lots of mistakes but nun fatal took sum picks will upload them later just took it for a ride all good :cool10:

I envy the folks that can do stuff like that. I'm just learning on how carburetors work not to take them apart but just what they do . amazing who ever designed that. bongobobny Posted January 11, 2014 #4 Posted January 11, 2014 Yes Yamagrl unfortunately 2nd gear is an issue with the '83, '84, and early '85, and unfortunately requires some major surgery to fix. The culprit is a cheap thrust washer...
yamagrl Posted January 11, 2014 #5 Posted January 11, 2014 I have been researching. I have found the original Yamaha Technical Bulletin. I'm wondering about postings for this issue. When I search with 2nd gear as the criteria I don't get many results. Certainly there must be some good postings. However I have run across a pretty good posting on engine removal. I think it was on the other venture website. I think I bookmarked it somewhere. It seems like the biggest part of the project is removing and reinstalling the engine. One of the mechanics at the local Yamaha dealer has been there for 30 years and he is pretty familiar with most venture issues. He said labor would be about 1200 dollars. That being said 1200 dollars that opens up a lot of options. Love this bike! Sent from my moto X

Thanks for the threads. I really love my bike so I'll do whatever's needed. After all, if I were in love with another bike I could very well be in for 20 or 30 grand. DragonRider Posted January 11, 2014 #8 Posted January 11, 2014 I did mine on the 83 about a year and a half ago, it wasnt too hard, you need help, I took my time, and it paid off, at the same time I changed the diaphragms in the carbs, and the old girl ran like new. Still wished I had her but I sold her in a weak moment to Jamie, Wingman and he loves her, I can still ride her when I get better, which is taking its time. But all in all its satisfying knowing you did something yourself.

pmelah Posted January 11, 2014 #10 Posted January 11, 2014 my 2nd gear hick uped on me one time at 45k that was when i really got on it hard since then i have taken it real easy and it hasent missed a beat but i know the day is comeing that i will have to do the 2nd gear fix right now she is at 57800 k on the clock so if i can make her last another 4 to 5 k before i have to go in that will be helpfull i plan on doing this myself with the helpful knowledge of this family it should be a breeze since this family has saved me thousands as for 800 o 1200 nope cant see it im too cheap and can use that money for other things like diaphrams breaks tires on the bike and having the satisfaction of doing it myself will be priceless riding down the road and stopping for coffee waiting for the hds and 2nd gens to catch up :rotf:

I have come to appreciate being able to do extra stuff like really good cleaning, polishing, additional maintenance, etc. when I have things apart. When I get close to starting I'll start a thread. I'm certain I'll need bunches of pointers and advice such as a list of gaskets etc. as well as other recommended repairs, replacements, upgrades to do while the engine is out. Still looking forward to seeing the Hell Yea's pics!

hell yea Posted January 12, 2014 Author #13 Posted January 12, 2014 :whistling:the hardest part was geting the motore out and back in the rest was easy i replaced the lot with a 86 tranny exept i had the lokal bike shop chang over the midel gear and shims so there would be no ishuws there cost 50 dolers but worth it as i dont have a press
hell yea Posted January 12, 2014 Author #14 Posted January 12, 2014 the first time you take that motor out is a nightmare gys and getting it back in wasent much easier , spiting the cases and replacing the tranys the easy part . i recommend replacing it with the later tranny as there are several upgrades aside from the thrust washers
hell yea Posted January 12, 2014 Author #15 Posted January 12, 2014 i left the rear headers off when i install the engine that was a mistake but it is possible to fit and remove them with the engine in the frame .you have to take the engine Mont bolts out and move the engine ford then remove the rear tappet cover then you can get them in and out the left hand side but its no fun
