cowpuc Posted January 11, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 11, 2014 Tippy and I LOVE back woods riding, exploring, camping, off road mountain touring and the like.. One of the funnest vehicles I ever owned was a 74 Jeep CJ5 I had back in the 70's.. We been yacking about getting another one, hooking a small trailer on it loaded with camping stuff and heading west to REALLY get lost in the outback.. Browsing the VR classifieds, looking at Georges trike (NICE SET-UP GEORGE, GREAT PRICE!!) and all of sudden it hit me.. What about a triked bike with a rear end that was somehow lockable to posi-trac for off road use, than unlockable for on road use... Any body know enough about trikes to know if such a set up is available from any of the trike conversion kits?? Ever seen or heard of such a thing?? I wonder what the differential trikes with independant suspention use for a pig? Gotta be way to build a rock crawlin, mountain climbing, back road woods machine still fully capable of long distance highway cruising... A cyclejeep.. Or maybe message a 1G Venny into a Ural (like Brians) with a hack would be better,, hmmm.. THOUGHTS??? Brainstorming sessions open..
Sylvester Posted January 11, 2014 Share #2 Posted January 11, 2014 It is called a URAL. To much time on your hands, Puc? Spring is coming...sooner for me than you, though. We are having thunderstorms right now.
Marcarl Posted January 11, 2014 Share #3 Posted January 11, 2014 Just keep in mind that if and when you lock that differential, you'll immediately loose all your steering capabilities,,,, kind of dangerous if you ask me..
Gary N. Posted January 11, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 11, 2014 Didn't they outlaw three wheel ATVs about 25 years ago after all the accidents?

Carbon_One Posted January 11, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 11, 2014 Puc I don't know of anyone offering Posi traction for a trike. Most companies use a Ford axle so it's possible that one could convert a standard axle into a posi unit. I'm not sure how that would handle on slippery surfaces but think it'd not be good. Beside that issue trikes also have a lower ground clearance as a general rule. My 05 RSV /Tri-Wing had much more ground clearance than my current RSV/Hannigan does. IMHO if you're serious about trail riding I think you'd be better off with a Ural / sidecar combo with the extra driven car wheel. Larry
ragtop69gs Posted January 11, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 11, 2014 Puc, If it's got a ford rear end, either 7.5 or 8.8 you could probably get an ARB air locker for it or an E-locker .

Ya that'd work. Hannigan uses the 7.5 Ford axles. Larry
friesman Posted January 12, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 12, 2014 Maybe check with Barend , he still has his leaning sidecar for sale. Brian
cowpuc Posted January 12, 2014 Author Share #10 Posted January 12, 2014 THANKS YOU GUYS FOR THE ADVICE!!! I totally understand the steering loss with posi, thats the reason for wondering about an "unlockable" type of system.. The purpose of having a true posi is only for the rare occasion where needed in the outback.. I was actually thinking along the lines of a Corvette rear-end (aluminum) - narrow, independent suspention,,.. With a true posi and a set of Lock-out hubs on the spindles,, disengage one hub when traveling highways and engage when needed, never heard of anyone doing this but hey, its a thought.. I am (obviously) wayyyyyyy old school in my knowledge of differentials.. The air-locker/electric locker mentioned is probably a much better idea.. I have looked at Ural's (neat o') and the side car idea but long distance travel becomes an issue and Tippy wont go the side car routine (we tried one out, playing around in a parking lot is fine, hanging out there on a highway - not so much).. Hey its winter,,, perfect time to let the mind wonder and wonder and wonder....
