CaptainJoe Posted January 6, 2014 #1 Posted January 6, 2014 Looks like I'm going to be traveling alot this year. Normally use Mapquest as it has fuel calculator and gives you a mirad of options to fill in. Would like to find an easy way to "auto mark" a trip in say 500-600 mile segments without having to add up all the milages. Has anyone found an easy way to do this?
Eck Posted January 6, 2014 #2 Posted January 6, 2014 I have the same problem every time I lead a ride or as I am now planning my trip out west this summer. Trying to chunk the trip in segments of 7 to 8 hours of riding and finding a place to stay in that area after each daily ride is a pain.. I use Google maps and wish I could download any map that I just created straight into my GPS, but I cant. I am waiting for my new GPS to arrive now in the mail. RedRider Posted January 6, 2014 #3 Posted January 6, 2014 Easiest trip planning software is Microsoft Streets and Trips. After planning, you can export it as a GPX file to the Garmin software Basecamp. Basecamp allows you to modify and/or load it into your GPS. Plan each day as a separate file/route and store it in your GPS this way. Each day, load that day's route and you are good to go. As an alternative, if you are just interested in getting from one location to another (without micro-planning the roads being used), just load the ending point of each day in the GPS. At the start of the day, set it as the destination and follow along. RR
BratmanXj Posted January 6, 2014 #5 Posted January 6, 2014 Easiest trip planning software is Microsoft Streets and Trips. After planning, you can export it as a GPX file to the Garmin software Basecamp. Basecamp allows you to modify and/or load it into your GPS. I use to use Delorme Street Atlas, got so use to it I did everything backwards with Microsoft. Now I have a Garmin Nuvi765t (4 yrs old) but most of the features of the higher end Zumos. Garmin got smart and started taking away a lot of the features forcing you to buy the $500+ Zumos. I still use the older Garmin MapSource software that has the "create route" feature not in Basecamp. You can place your own waypoints along a route and plan your day trip. In one file you can do up to 1,000 waypoints and multiple routes. Load to a Garmin GPS that allows custom routes and you're all ready to go.
2WHEELSFORME Posted January 6, 2014 #6 Posted January 6, 2014 I will second the Microsoft Streets and Trips. I have been using it for years and it is easy to learn and has tons of options. Trip times are adjustable to your riding style so very accurate. One time cost is low at Office Depot etc.
cowpuc Posted January 6, 2014 #7 Posted January 6, 2014 (edited) Just follow the front wheel!! GPS = Go Park Somewhere, we're ridin.. Of course, the few times where I have ran out of gas, had to sleep behind a bush in a Burger King parking lot or share a last cranola bar for dinner did produce some thoughts of - a little planning may not have hurt but what the heck, all part of the adventure.... Motorcycle Mike Posted January 6, 2014 #8 Posted January 6, 2014 Just follow the front wheel!! My prefered method, however, I use this alot. http://tripplanner.honda.com/
CaptainJoe Posted January 6, 2014 Author #9 Posted January 6, 2014 Motorcycle Mike My prefered method, however, I use this alot. http://tripplanner.honda.com/ Looks good but still doesn't segment. Also requires you to register? Not sure if it's free... also allows direct importing exporting to gps? Have to check out exporting to my GPS but that really wasn't my major concern. Segmenting was. Found a work around in MapQuest: Enter start and stop locations click on print It will give total miles driven at end of each direction. select direction that is close to your goal "say 500 miles" and Zoom in on it. You can now see the towns in the area and modify the trip planer by adding a stop. I plan on doing this unless theres something else out there. That way will have a destination to enter into the GPS every morning. Thanks for all the info...
k9cottage Posted January 6, 2014 #10 Posted January 6, 2014 it works out the mileage can even locate hotels motels it is free and uses google maps and downloads to garmin or tomtom http://www.tyretotravel.com/ well worth a look.
XV1100SE Posted January 6, 2014 #11 Posted January 6, 2014 I will second the Microsoft Streets and Trips. ... I third it. We used it last summer for our 10,000 km (6,200 mile) trip West. You can put in things like : - start of day - how often to take a break and how long each break will be - gas mileage you get, cost per gallon/liter = will tell you fuel cost - how many hours to ride each day, end of day (with flexibility) - start/end/way points (way points as in things you want to see along the way) - for way points you can put in how long you want to spend seeing the sight individually (you might put in 30 minutes for one point, couple hours for another....) The program will show you the optimum route, will show you where you'll be at the end of each day (if you stay to your schedule). Knowing where your end of day stopping point will be you can have it show you hotels/camp grounds/restaurants in the area. The program will also tell you things to see and do along the route (based on criteria you choose - State/Provincial Parks, historic sights, scenic views, etc). We took a laptop along with us and at the end of the day reviewed where we were, adjusted the route based on when/where we actually stopped for the day, added or removed points of interest, dragged the route to roads we learned about as we went, then reloaded it to our Garmin Zumo 660. I installed "Mad Maps" to the Garmin as well and used it to add way points to our route or took side trips as it pointed out things we weren't aware of. (Mad Maps loaded to the Garmin didn't load routes...just points of interest). For planning our trip I used State/Provincial web sites to pick and choose what we wanted to see, added them to Streets and Trips...then removed places that didn't fit our time frame. I also used web sites like : America's Byways National Scenic Byways America's State Parks DiscoverAmerica Firestone Legendary Drives MAD MAPS Scenic Road Trips Travel and Tourism Sites for U.S. States and Territories U.S. National Park Service USA Travel and Tourism Guide, Tourist Attractions, Destinations RoadTrippers I know this is a little more than what you asked.... but for trip planning, I hope it helps ! For any State or Province you are going to, do a search on the internet for the State/Province/City "tourism". Stop as you cross borders at the tourism offices for free maps and pamphlets. Be flexible on your route, what you want to see (add and remove places as you go), factor in rain days or non-riding days. For non-riding days, make use of them to see museums, local sites. I have other travel tips which depending on your experience might help. If you want to chat, let me know.
BOO Posted January 7, 2014 #12 Posted January 7, 2014 Eck, I got a new garmin in Sept with lifetime maps and traffic. I got to say I am really unhappy with it. The speed limit is not right a lot and in places I know hasn't changed in years. Also when I search for a business it can't find it and they are not new business. I shot off a blast to Garmin but nothing so far. I've been using my cell done. Hope yours works better. Boo I have the same problem every time I lead a ride or as I am now planning my trip out west this summer. I'm really liking this software... hopefully it has lifetime updates?
Jayceesfolly Posted January 7, 2014 #17 Posted January 7, 2014 No, no lifetime updates. My version is about two years old and I haven't had a problem with finding a road or address. The hotels and restaurants may be a little out of date but my GPS can fill in when needed. I have been using S&T for about 5 years and like it a lot. I think it's a great deal for $40. You can import and export GPX files and also has a GPS function built in. Jim
XV1100SE Posted January 7, 2014 #18 Posted January 7, 2014 Even though the software version might be a year or two old, it does map updates.
2WHEELSFORME Posted January 7, 2014 #19 Posted January 7, 2014 It updates, even road construction if you have the CD or you can run without the CD but no updates, that allows you to use it on more than one computer. The great part is you can tune it to show your travleling times. really helps on planning a day. It does take some set up with telling how fast you drive on each type of roads. Put 10 mph on interstates it will keep you away from those but will greatly extend your estimated travel time if interstate is the only choise of a road.
djh3 Posted January 7, 2014 #20 Posted January 7, 2014 Plus whatever on the Streets and Trips. Mine is like 2009. Works really well. I supose a newer version has a few more bells an whistles. I had 05 before this and it did construction and road updates for 4yr or something. I dont think I have ever got mine to export as aGPX file though. I use TYRE. I will lay the route in S&T adnd get GPS cordinates for places like gas stops, places to visit etc and plug them into TYRE. Then map the route. A bit time consuming but it works. TYRE is free but will not do the milage sectioning you want. It will give you a total of the milage for the route and milage inbetwwen turns etc.
Jayceesfolly Posted January 7, 2014 #21 Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks for the correction, Don. I didn't realize it updated, never checked actually. I knew the construction update was there but seldom used it. It's still a great program for $40 though. Jim
djh3 Posted January 7, 2014 #22 Posted January 7, 2014 I really like that you can plan brakes in, fuel warnings at so many miles figure in the time of the brake etc. I dont leave the CD in the computer and it still asks me to update construction info. The only reason I bought the 09 version is my previous one quit updating construction. Oh by the way if you havent checked out TYRE here is a link. For me much easier to use than the base camp thing.
RedRider Posted January 7, 2014 #24 Posted January 7, 2014 Thanks for the correction, Don. I didn't realize it updated, never checked actually. I knew the construction update was there but seldom used it. It's still a great program for $40 though. Jim Keep an eye open and it can be had for as little as $15. I renew mine every 3 years or so.
