VentureFar Posted December 30, 2013 #1 Posted December 30, 2013 I really want the "Mile Eater" shirt from the Iron Butt Assoc and to get it you need to have accomplished 2 events. So yesterday I took off for my 2nd SS1000 at 7am from Los Angeles and Road 8 hours to Redding CA. Turned around and took 9 hours to get back. 17 hours and 1026 actual Miles ( odometer showed 1064 ). I didn't expect it to be so cold but I did plan for that and took all my cold gear so the worst was feeling cold but NOT teeth chattering. I wanted to make it up to the turn around point as soon as possible so I carried a two gallon gas can that I used on the side of the Freeway. So I made it 513 miles up with only 1 gas station stop - two freeway stops. I don't know how many more IB's I have in me - it is a cool accomplishment but a really LONG day in the saddle - especially in winter when the days are so short. So much more concentration required to ride in the dark. Anyone else done 2 or more ? Again Kudo's to Rick Butler for making my RSV saddle so comfortable that I never felt my "rear". VentureFar Posted December 30, 2013 Author #3 Posted December 30, 2013 You know it is NOT the butt - ( thanks to Rick Butler) - for me it is hardest riding 75mph at night for 7 hours. -- and 2 5hour energy's -- is that cheating? I have good light but the concentration at night is so much more taxing. I wouldn't have considered IB on my Honda Shadow 1100 Spirit - did 876 one very special day but that was IT. VentureFar...

Mostly gas stop to gas stop. 200 miles at a sitting. If you are like me, you will need to take more breaks at the end side of the ride. Also the first one we left at 3 am. That totally messed with my sleep schedule. This time I got a good night rest and left at 7 am - which is normal timing and got home at midnight - which again is about normal. This ride was easier from that point of view because it was "on my normal schedule " Oh and try not to go with a Harley rider. They tend to break down and cost you 2 hours - ---did I say that out loud? Oops. VentureFar...

Actually on the way home after dark it was 0C in places and I had hand warmers in my warmest gloves - and every bit of warm gear I own was on me. it is 71F and clear blue skies in Los Angeles Today - watch the Rose Parade :-) VentureFar...

Included bad traffic in Charlotte, Jacksonville, Orlando and the inevitable big rig drag race up and down the hills of SC on 26 between Columbia and I 95. About 1 or so more gas stops and I would have been there.

bmiller Posted December 31, 2013 #14 Posted December 31, 2013 Congrats on the completion of the SS ride! I did the SS and BB ride this past September, over 2500 kilometers in under 36 hours. It was long days in the saddle for sure but what a great way to spend a weekend. I agree this is a "cool" accomplishment, can't imagine what it would be like riding this time of the year, we have snow and ice on the ground up here and -25 degree temps. Two thumbs up for your ride, congrats again!
VentureFar Posted December 31, 2013 Author #15 Posted December 31, 2013 Christmas Day (last week) i left Baltimore md to drive my aunt's BMW car to Los Angeles. That was 2700 miles in 56 hours. I love my RSV but there is no way I could have done that on the bike. I only did this second IB because I really want the Mile Eater T shirt that you can only buy if you have done 2 IBA events. No "rally's for me. I enjoy 500 to 800 mile days but adding the last 200 miles seems to stretch my comfort/ enjoyment limits. VentureFar...

Fantastic steak dinners there !!!!! Redding, CA. to La Grande, Or, is a better ride though. OR, from Redding, take CA. 36 West to the Pacific Coast !! Even better

Even better In sept 2010 I took a week and ride from La up 395 thru Tahoe, Shasta etc up to see Mount St Helen's then back down the east side and to Reno for the air races. Nice week !!! I have several of their group, just because thats what works for me. Yes the part of the trip from torontto to bluefield was. Miserable in spots. Only heavy rain maybe 2 hours total. But was more the road mist garbage that fouls up the windshield and your glasses.

Bought the bike in late July, '99 with 50k. Just need to make sure maintenance is up to snuff, not knocking the bike, just needed some time with her.

The other tip is of you are running battery devices like Bluetooth make sure you have a backup or charger as they only last 8-10-12 hours not 17+. VentureFar...
