From hospitals to YMCAs, from churches to community centers, more Americans volunteer time and money to charitable causes than any other country. Giving is the cornerstone of our nation’s culture and America’s heritage of generosity. If you, or others you know, have worked to improve our community, again, I thank you! I believe that Americans, especially American youth, should be proud of our country. We are still the magnet for the world, truly a “shining city upon the hill”. An important part of civic education, in addition to learning about history and our form of government, is to learn to be proud of our country and the responsibilities of the individual to help maintain and try to make it perfection. Is it the best possible? Of course not, but it's in our unending drive for improvement and our freedoms and liverties that allow even the notion that is so remarkable in this world. It's the individual that makes the whole stronger, not the whole that makes the individual the way they accept, a key difference in self-responsibility and authoritarian dogma. Just like each of us get's up to start the day, our dedication starts at home, then family, community and country. Thank you to those many millions that find a moment in the day to extend a hand to those less fortunate. It, again, proves that the most careful and thoughtful way to help is not through taxes and selective rewards but to loving good will and generosity. The folly is in thinking generosity can be governed. Sometimes the best you can offer is a smile, but that, too, can be a marvelous gift. A few weeks ago, a Navy hospital ship returned to San Diego. The number of patients treated, surgeries performed, all in other countries, brought tears to my eyes. We think this is normal, but it is another issue that makes this country exceptional. That is why it has always been important to me to recognize the selfless efforts of so many on behalf of our community. It is in America that we can, and we all understand to, work to “make this world a better place”, there are so few other options. As far as getting a day off for their religious holiday, that would be between them and their boss. Guess that leaves the atheists at work... Merry CHRISTmas! As an Atheist, I would love to take my day in lieu of Christmas day in the warm weather when I could be riding, not in the middle of the shortest daylight part of the year when its too cold to ride!!!!! Trader Posted December 24, 2013 Share #32 Posted December 24, 2013 As one of Jehovah's Witnesses I try to live my life according to the Bible and avoid anything that involves religious teachings that are not supported by the Bible. It is well known that Dec. 25 is NOT the actual day of Christ's birth but is a date arbitrarily assigned. BUT....even though I don't get involved in Christmas or other holidays, I don't get offended if someone offers me good tidings or best wishes...no matter how it is worded. Of course if they KNOW my beliefs and wish me a Merry Christmas so as to just rub my nose in it....then that's a different matter. I am happy to wish everyone merry christmas or to help them celebrate any of their religious festivals. To me it is a chance to experience new customs, and more importantly, new foods. Now for my story: Got an email this week from our internet supplier, a local setup. They wished me Happy Holidays, so I sent back a message asking if they had got my Christmas package. The reply was that they had looked all over the office and, NO, nobody had seen anything from us,,, and should they be looking for something then????? I replied: opps sorry, we sent out Christmas packages, but not any Holiday packages,,, sorry for the mix-up. Haven't heard back from them,,, winder why. I think this has a lot to do with the media and people who are trying to put down religions and families. Religious places are places where people meet and socialise and exchange ideas and discuss things that involves their lives... besides going for prayers...and the people that want to run our lives, would rather have us as individuals and not as family units or communities, so we can be controlled more easily. You know how one wolf will run away from a human if he is alone, but if they are in a pack, they will have you for lunch. Its similar to what unions are to corporations...Corporations would love not to have unions. This is what I believe, anyway. Frankly, for me I am a Christian and I don't get upset if someone says Happy Holidays to me. I just consider that to include Christmas and New Years and the days in between. Whether people look at Christmas for religious reasons, or maybe just Santa coming down the chimney. Either way its a special time of year. As long as my wish is genuine thats all I can do, and most people will accept it for what it is, a heartfelt greeting. Now if you will excuse me, I gotta go plug in my Holiday Tree.........
