Kregerdoodle Posted December 22, 2013 #1 Posted December 22, 2013 I went out to start the beast yesterday, have had it on the battery tender for about 2 weeks, The fuel pump did its thing, the dash reset, everything went just as it should, then when I tried to start it, 2-3 clicks and nothing, dash wouldn`t even come back on. pulled the battery and the + post is Black...anodized?? any way, would the Tender have done this, or is the battery just shot? I put it on the bench and charged it, only took about 5 min. to get to full charge, but I don`t trust it now. was really wanting to know if the Tender could have messed up the battery. K
Caveman Posted December 22, 2013 #2 Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) I've never heard of a battery tender doing this. My bet would be battery cable/connection or the main cable down where it grounds at the horn. How old is the battery? Edited December 22, 2013 by Caveman more info
Squidley Posted December 22, 2013 #3 Posted December 22, 2013 I've never heard of a battery tender doing this. My bet would be battery cable/connection or the main cable down where it grounds at the horn. How old is the battery? I'm with Caveman on his statements, what I would do in addition is since it has been fully charged, take it to the auto store and have them load test it. This will tell you if the battery is shot and you can make better decisions from there... BTW......Your an EEEGIT Kreg!
Flyinfool Posted December 22, 2013 #4 Posted December 22, 2013 Since you mentioned that the terminal is black. I would start by cleaning the terminals back to shiny lead.
MikeWa Posted December 22, 2013 #5 Posted December 22, 2013 +1 Clean the terminals and retry. The symptoms you described are typical poor connections. Mike

GeorgeS Posted December 23, 2013 #7 Posted December 23, 2013 Is it a lead acid type ??? If so, remove frome bike, charge for about 6 to 10 hours. Let is sit for 24 hours , then check the voltage with an accurate meter. If dropping below 12V, and if its past about 4 years, well, its probably ready for th bone yard. If its an AGM, basicly the same drill. Charge it, let sit for 24 to 48 hours, then recheck. ( out of bike, or disconnected, of course ) Always a chance that something on the bike is draining the battery, with Key Off !!
midnightventure Posted December 23, 2013 #8 Posted December 23, 2013 If the battery was actually dead but showed charged a few minutes after being put on a charger that is a pretty good sign the battery is shot. The previously suggested load test would be a good idea.
Kregerdoodle Posted December 25, 2013 Author #9 Posted December 25, 2013 Thanks everyone and Merry Christmas to all!! The battery is around 4yrs old so ready for a new one any way. I will check it out again today, as it has set a good 24hrs or more sense being charged, and will take it to NAPA tomorrow for a load test. It will probably become a back up for the lawn tracter.
aharbi Posted December 26, 2013 #10 Posted December 26, 2013 Don't know why but my Venture seems tobe harder on batteries than my other bikes. I get 3 years out of a battery. The last one I put in was an AGM X2 Power (X2-20L) has a 24 month free replacement. Got it locally at http://www.batteriesplus.com. If I recall I paid right around $100. Could of got it less expensive online but the last one I got online lasted 3 months (one year warranty) and they gave me such grief to return it. I swore would never get another online and I haven't. I wanted someone local that I could ah... touch face to face :-) I also have and use three battery tenders, summer or winter, they can detect a problem before you find out "on the road". You can get them cheap, someone has them on sale all the time. I only use the brand name Deltran Battery Tender.
