Always looking for that next ride and noticed this on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Royal-Star-2001-yamaha-royal-star-/251394324776?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3a8844f928&item=251394324776&pt=US_motorcycles

Of course LOTS of questions came to mind, primarily the statement of it doesnt "crank" and only has a few hundred miles on it... So I browse the pics and noticed in pic 7 (pic of throttle side controls) what appears to be corroding of the aluminum - maybe salt water from flooding?? Wish I were in Jesup Georgia,, might be worth a peak..

Thoughts?

Flooding is the first thing that comes to my mind. Would probably need to be completely stripped down to catch everything. Electronics and wiring would need to be replaced if it was flooded. :322:

Hey Puc,

The fact that this bike WON'T CRANK, pretty much sums it up. Also, the ad mentioned that it had an oil leak. IMHO this bike has either been "scuba diving", or someone ran it out of oil. The "buy it now" price is $6200.00, you can buy a perfectly good running Second Gen. for that kind of money. A crank kit and a gasket set plus the price of the bike would be near the cost of a much newer, excellent running bike.

Just my thoughts, for what they are worth. :confused24:

Buddy I would like to see it before I would offer low bid on it. Something just ain't right and could be several somethings. But it could be great deal at about starting bid. I don't know about that mileage. May somebody could look at it for you. It is interesting. I got one of them things in the garage that misses and runs like crap right now. Un oh I didn't say that out loud did I??? I wouldn't pay anywhere close to what he wants with the description of it.

Yea I thought the same thing Earl BUT it also starts at 2000, a bid at 2 whether or not the reserve will disappear and could end up with it.... If the motor aint locked up and the reason its not "cranking" is related to the switch or battery,,, you know the routine...

THANKS for all the input guys!!!!!

Better be careful with those wise cracks there Dan,,, getting tossed in the slammer is one thing,, getting tossed off VR - now THAT would be horrible :rotf::rotf::rotf:

Exactly!! That would be a MAJOR job,,, be easier to rebuild the old 83....

Wanna see the list of places I been tossed from??

Why do ya think I stay in my corner??

2nd Gen saw me petting Brown Sugar ever Time I went to garage. Guess it got jealous. Started today and right side warmed right up left never did start firing right. 15 min and I could still put fingers on pipe under shield. Sure you want a 2nd Gen???:whistling::rotfl::rotfl:

It would be good to get someone to look at it. When I can't walk away from one without looking back I usually end up with it.

If I were looking at that bike, I would use the eBay 'ask the seller a question'...

Put it right out there...Does he know why it wont crank? Has it been submerged? Does anything on the bike work at all?

Cant hurt...you might find out something useful.

It is odd and ponders some questions. Why is the right control corroded and yet the left doesnt appear that way. The passenger seat looks to be splitting. Paint looks OK so I dunno if its been out in the weather or not. I think Jessup is over by the coast 50 or so miles from Savanha Ga. We got any folks over there. Heres a little safer bet maybe. I think its Ruffy has one for sale here. Shoot at least then you know how ya can bitc# at.

With only 700 miles on it, it could have been ridden the first year and then never ridden again. Entirely possible that the rings are seized to the cylinder walls. That pitting could just be oxidation from lack of attention if it sat all those years.

In my world there is a difference in "crank" and "start". To me crank means "spin over" and start means, well you know!

I wonder if the seller means start when he says crank? :confused24:

All good questions. Whats the tie down things on the trunk? That look like an odd way to carry extra luggage. I'd send them a message asking for more info, or better yet a phone number. It looks to be at a car lot of some sort. It would take me about 6 hr to ride up there. Mike g in sc or GA wildcat might be your best bets I can think of for folks somewhat in that area. Although Warner Robins is closer to Macon. Watch the add for a few days. I'm on e-bay and I'll fire a coupl questions his way and see if they respond.

OK so I may have made them mad but this is what I sent.

Will the bike not crank because the battery is dead? Will the engine turn over? What kind of condition is the paint and upolstery in? Without knowing some of these conditions it is imposible to make a bid. A running bike of this age typicaly wont fetch this much.

Puc,

too many variables it seems just from reading all the posts to get involved in a "potential' headache, not to mention a financial burden as well. There are plenty of 2nd gens that RUN right here on the forum. You can probably get Yammer Dan's for a drop in the bucket, seeing he is practically allergic to his...:whistling:

Sorry, per Google, I'm 240 miles from Jessup.

I see where the Ebay description now says NOT RUNNING. I think that was changed. (I thought I saw "running, will not crank" yesterday.)

Seller appears to be involved with a used car dealership, see other items for sale.

Has one red complaint in his sold history, but was in 2006 for a truck not well represented.

Unless you can get it as a project for $2000, you can find similar good running bikes for their asking price. You looking for a project or something to ride, or just "a find"?

Hey Mike

Always looking for the next "project".. Our 83 is getting worn out, and over the course of the winter I may upgrade if the right one comes along.. I have sucked the life out of 1 - 84 and 4-83's (all under $1000), do ALOT of "trails", backwoods camping and stuff riding beaters and love the option of being able to leave a broken down heap where it broke, or give it away (if I cant fix it).. I would have a hard time giving a broken down $5000 bike to some kid...

Seems like more and more people have caught onto the real "value" of the old 1st gens (my butt is molded like the seat of a 1st gen) and the $1000 bikes are getting harder and harder to find, seems like I see more and more of them in the 2, 3 and $4000 range... Thats the main reason that ebay bike caught my eye..

I too tried to contact the seller on ebay (before I posted this thread) with no response.. If anyone here happens to be in that area and wouldnt mind taking a peek THAT WOULD BE GREAT but PLEASE dont make a special trip..

Thanks you guys for all the input...:backinmyday: and the ad-Venture continues..

I was through Jesup on Sunday for a PGR mission but I didn't know anything about this until tonight. I live about 60 miles from there but could only possibly have checked it out on the weekend due to my work schedule. Sorry.

Seller updated site. Here is what he sent me.

Dear djh3_88,

The bike was running fine when it was traded in, and it actually has a carburetor leak; not an oil leak. The issue with it not cranking is a battery issue.

Paint is in pretty good condition. There is some rust in a few places. The passenger seat has 2 tears about 2.5-3 in long.

A couple options by me here in sunny Fla. Fixer upper 84 w/20K on clock 86 no trunk 1850 99 w/82K 4200 but you might get him to work with you.Nice looking 86 w/15K 4500 Yea I know they are all in Fla but it would give you an excuse to get out of the cold for a few days huh? Actually I kind of picked areas I know we have members that might could go take a look see for ya. There were a coupl more for less but one had a 2nd gear problem, and the other was the "I wanted a project and now dont have time, doesnt run" types. I figure they are missing essential parts

I tried looking some on the "statewide" type CL listing but got to many of them snowmobile things showing up.

Thanks Djh3!! I appreciate the info and especially the "give ya an excuse to escape to Florida" idea, never know, it may come to that this winter!! Lots and lots of bikes out there for sure!!

Thanks for posting the info the folks from Georgia sent you, gonna keep a weathered eye on that one...
