Peder_y2k Posted November 27, 2013 #1 Posted November 27, 2013 Slow leak developed at this hex plug. What fix? Is it an o-ring, or a crush washer seal? Lower right side gen1 slightly below and to the rear of the water pump. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
dingy Posted November 27, 2013 #2 Posted November 27, 2013 The hex plug on the bottom of water pump is coolant drain. Probably needs washer replaced. If it is plug going into block, it is an oil galley shutoff. This one has an allen head socket. Gary
MiCarl Posted November 27, 2013 #3 Posted November 27, 2013 The plug you circled doesn't have coolant behind it. The coolant is coming from somewhere else and running there. You made me go look at mine, and I have a drip on the water pump drain plug. Of course I just put in my parts order this morning. The water pump drain plug is about 3" forward, above and outboard of what you have circled. It's 19mm hex head. You can probably get a crush washer that fits it at the auto parts store.
Peder_y2k Posted November 27, 2013 Author #4 Posted November 27, 2013 I'll be darned, on closer inspection the coolant is exiting the water pump weep hole. This leak is minor (3-4 drops) and occurs only when the bike has been shut off after being thoroughly warmed up. As it cools down, leak stops. Comments? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
MiCarl Posted November 27, 2013 #5 Posted November 27, 2013 Mechanical seal on the water pump is failing. Time to replace it.
Peder_y2k Posted November 27, 2013 Author #6 Posted November 27, 2013 11H-12438-00-00 SEAL, MECHANICAL11H-12438-00-00 SEAL, MECHANICAL11H-12438-00-00 SEAL, MECHANICAL is shown as "Part Obsolete", but on google search I find same part number assigned to other bikes/ATV's still available for around $25.00. Would it be safe to assume this is same part for my '88VR? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
MiCarl Posted November 27, 2013 #7 Posted November 27, 2013 It is obsolete because it's been updated. New part number is: 11H-12438-10-00 You will also need 3JP-12449-02-0 GASKET, WATER PUMP.

GeorgeS Posted November 28, 2013 #10 Posted November 28, 2013 I would try changing coolant, drain at bottom plug. Do a good flush. I use the Orange stuff. Maby add a small amount of leak stop. ( very small ) Run the bike, it might stop leaking. Worth a try before ripping and tearing.
Peder_y2k Posted November 28, 2013 Author #11 Posted November 28, 2013 New coolant 4 months ago. Will consider stop leak experiment. Thanks George -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
