M61A1MECH Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 (edited) OK so I came across a deal to good to pass up, a set of used BUB slip-ons for a Venture for $70.00 including shipping. The seller said they were on the bike when he bought it and they were to loud, he found a set of stock mufflers and liked them so he offered the BUBS up for sale. I grabbed them, figured I would try them in place of my KromeWerks and keep which ever I liked the best and sell the others. Well turns out that some knuckle head has taken the baffles out of the BUBS, all that is left is about a 2.5 inch stub of baffle pipe on the inside of the end cap cones. I am sure I do not want to run straight pipes, the KromeWerks are loud enough. Does any one know if the baffle pipe in the BUB slip-ons can be replaced? Or have any ideas on how to fix a set of baffle pipes back into the cans? I assume the baffles are supposed to be removable so they can be repacked. I will be contacting BUB to see what they say. If they cannot be repaired, does anyone want a set of gutted BUBS for their bike? Edited November 24, 2013 by M61A1MECH
Gary N. Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 That pipe is your baffle. You need to get some exhaust packing and re-pack them as all of the original packing has burnt off. I found packing on ebay for cheap $$$. Got enough to repack several times. Just wrap the baffle with as much or as little as you like to get the sound you want. I put as much on mine as would fit. PS. if the chrome has lifted on your tips you can replace them with some from a HD. Just do a search on here to find posts on how to do that.
M61A1MECH Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 Gary, Thanks, but I certian that the pipe for the baffle must be more than 2.5 inches long. Essentially there is no baffle pipe to wrap with repacking, I can see where the pipe has been cut off with a hack saw. The end caps are just aluminum, no chrome, if I get the baffle issue worked out I will eaither polish them or black the out with high temp paint or powder coat. I have contacted BUB, will wait to see what they say.

Maybe a little longer. You could probably just weld something on to what you have. Maybe BuB has replacements.
M61A1MECH Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 BUB has replacements for some of the Harley pipes, nothing listed for the Venture, I have emailed them, I am hoping for some help from them.
djh3 Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Steve if you can get an idea of about how long they should be and what they look like, maybe you can take some small ID exhaust pipe and weld a piece back onto the stub you have. Youll have to close off the end and drill holes, then wrap the packing around and put back together. I would think they should have replacement parts though. They were probably harley pipes to start with.
M61A1MECH Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 Dion Yeah, I was alread designing a home made replacement in my head, very much as you described. The BUB pipes and slip-ons are designed and made specificlly for Ventures. I am hoping BUB will reply to my email and have replacement parts.
M61A1MECH Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 OK so I got hold of BUB and they are willing to sell the replacement baffle pipes with packing for about $130.00, they are out of stock and I have to wait a few weeks for them to make a production run. When I asked them about the baffle pipe being pressed into the end cap, it took them by surprize and they asked for the part numbers on the pipes and assured me they would send the correct parts based on the part numbers from the cans. Does anyone have photos of the baffles from their BUBs? I would be curious as to any changes in design they may have made, because the little stubs I have certianly appear to be pressed into the end caps, I suspect I will need to freeze them and put them into an arbor press or something to get them out, but not doing any of that until I get my paws in the replacements.
Gary N. Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 (edited) Best I can do. The tips were easy to knock off but I wasn't trying to be careful as I was changing them to HD fishtails. I just clamped the baffle in the vise and used a chisel to knock off the bub tips. This pic shows how I welded on some nuts to take up the space of the thickness of the original tips and center the baffles. The HD tips were only stamped steel. Edited November 27, 2013 by Gary N.
M61A1MECH Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Gary Thanks, that is what I was looking for, the part where you welded the nuts on is still in my tips, I have not really tried to get them off, but will do soon.
djh3 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Is the piece in the vise longer than what you have now?
M61A1MECH Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 oh yeah way longer, I only have a stub of the baffle pipe that is about 2.5 inches long.
djh3 Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 OH my. Guess whoever was really going for the Harley sound. Short of welding it I guess you could use the methiod we were talking about and drill a hole thru and slide a cotter key thru both pieces to hold your added part on. But I would think you could tack weld a longer piece in there and acomplish it alot nicer.
Gary N. Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Steve, I found these http://www.ebay.com/itm/PYTHON-2-5-COMPETITION-BAFFLE-FOR-PREDATOR-SLIP-ON-MUFFLERS-21893-/291026048850?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43c2811752&vxp=mtr and many others on ebay. Why not look on there and find the ones you think will work the best, weld them to what you have and buy some packing and try it out. Much cheaper than the ones from Bub.
M61A1MECH Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 (edited) Dion, I am expecting the replacement parts from BUB to have the "bell" end that goes into the end cap attached the the pipe, so all I should have to do is get the stubs out of mine and put the the ones in and fasten them to the cones and the cans. If I do not get the "bell" portion, I will have to get the new parts welded to the stubs, should be easy enough, a couple of my guys at work have welders at home. So I am just going to wait until the new parts arrive from BUB and that will dictate the next step. Gary, Thanks, but the deal is done with BUB, I am not so worried about the money as I am about making sure it is a correct as I can make it. I am sure there are less expensive ways to skin this cat, but sometimes by the time you get done monkeying around with a fix the time and money ends up being the same as the doing it with factory parts.
