Before I left for tail of the dragon last 4th of July, I replaced the battery in my Gen 1 because it was cranking wierd.

Now usually I buy Advanced Auto AGM batteries which have a 1 year warranty. My CB 750 has one & it never fails. Unfortunatly they didn't have the one for my bike so I wound up going to Autozone. They had the same AGM $10 cheaper but with only a 3 month warranty. When I got back from Deal, I also replaced the starter to a 4 brush unit.

The issue I have been having is after 4 days, she cranks slowly & then dies out. If I A load test show the battey just over weak...of course it's out of warranty.

I'm looking to replace it & need some help. What I am looking for is a battery of the same durablity as the Old Sears Die Hard battery was back in the day. 30 years ago, when you use to say DIE HARD batteries, you were talking EXCEPTIONAL!

So I need a heavy duty battery for my Gen 1 with a long warranty which can sit a week without leaving me flat.

Any help would be appreciated

If your battery is going flat in a week, there is something that is not turning off with the key.

You need to be sure that the bike is working right before you replace the battery.

And, you need to make sure your charging system is up to par.

Checked for an amp draw and saw none. Checked the charging system & it was putting out as per specs. I didn't have this issue with the old battery, it was just very old & I was being proactive. The load test on the battery after I fully charged it showed it just above weak. Not what I expected from a 4 month battery.

Did you get one of the AGM's made in China ???

I made that mistake for battery for the CX-500. Only lasted about 10 Month.

Replaced with a DEKA , AGM.

I'm sure you already have, but I gotta ask. What is the VDC at the batt terminals when the bike is running over 2,000RPM? Should be 14.2-14.4vdc. Also there are AGM's and then there are AGM's.... DEKA seems to be the batt of choice for many Venture riders. Good quality 'Made in the USA' battery. With proper maintenance it should last 5+ years.

Using a voltmeter I am withing those specs. I have been doing some research on batteries & I did find the Johnson Controls makes most batteries. The big issue is they all have different specs. Autozone, Walmart, Advanced all buy a lower grade battery. Sears also buys but they are higher grade. Deka seems to be a winner in all aspects.

One of the things I like about the DEKA is they have the same foot print as the OEM. The Odysseys have to be padded. Also the DEKA is rated a bit higher than Odyssey's. And... very importantly... the DEKA are a better buy. :mo money:That said I still have a couple of Odyssey's sitting in the corner of the office. Charge them once a year. Takes about 15 minutes to top them off.

Just as an epilogue to my battery issue...

I again went looking for a parasitic drain but found nothing when I connected my multimeter. I left it connected & went to get a soda. As I was sitting there drinking, I happened to glance at the meter & saw the needle jump every 10 seconds or so. I started disconnecting stuff until I found it. It appears when the alarm is NOT armed, it pulses. When armed it is a steady draw.

I have one of those 2 way alarms that notifies the keyfob when the alarm goes off.

I disconnected the alarm fuse Dec 17th & have not touched the bike. I when out today & tried to start her & It's kinda cold outside today. It took about 5 hits of the starter button, but she started...& with NO visible loss of battery cranking power. So I have my culprit. Now to install a hidden secure disconnect switch for the alarm ground.

I bought a DEKA from Earl, and I have had very good luck with it

I was all set to pull the trigger on a new Deka from Skydoc. He made me a good deal & I had bought the progressive from him which I love but in light of the above, I can put it off a few years since the battery in my bike was bought in June.

Does the DEKA batteries have the Third post as my First Hen Royale has???

Best battery I found is the Interstate battery. Everything I own has an Interstate and usually get about five years out of the in the bike.

Ok so I finally broke down replaced the Autozone sealed battery that I bought last July.

Earl (skydoc_17) hooked me up with a new Deka battery. HUGE difference between this & my Autozone battery.

I had charged my old battery full & it did start my bike ok BUT when I swapped out to the Deka & hit the starter button I couldn't believe how fast she cranked. I was so quick I BARELY heard her crank before she fired up! Made the 4 brush starter FLY! :)

Again a big THUMBS UP & THANK YOU to skydoc_17, that's the 2nd time he has come through for me in a BIG way! (1st time was the Progressives)

In case any new members don't know him HE'S DA MAN!! :cool10:

Yeah BIG difference quality makes. Let the bike sit for almost 2 weeks...She cranked up & started EXACTLY like the day I put in the new Deka from Earl.

PERFECT!

Deka in every battery I replace, Venture has second one on now in 8 years, it was only $81.00 when i bought it 2 years ago, just bought a DEKA ETX-18L for my Goldwing, $85.00 including tax

My Dodge Magnum has a very unusual battery, DEKA went in to replace the stock factory battery, my Ford diesel has 2 DEKA, so does both Vulcans.

Do the battery monitor mod, 2k ohm resistor in one end of the green plug, other end of resistor to a switched 12v source.
