Anyone have any comments or advice on 2006 gmc/chevy 1500 pickup? My last truck was 1999 gmc seirra, loved that truck and want to get another. Always bought 4x4 living in Michigan but here in N. Carolina I think Ill get my first 2 wd. Dont see a need for it really. Thinking maybe a extended cab, but dont really need much extra space. Cab n a half or quad cab would be a waste. Just me and the wife and a big golden retriever these days. Buddy says dodge makes a good truck now but Ive always been a gm man- dont think I can look at them or fords- no offense to anyone- just what I like. Any feedback would be appreciated. 2006 is ruff too- just saw one I like- may be newer or older- just wanna stay around 80 to 100 k miles or less and under 15 k

I just traded my '96 GMC and got a '11 Chevy.

I went to look at an 08 with 70K but then saw this 11 with 10k for just a couple thou more.

Since I am still in WI and spend a lot of time in the MI UP I got 4x4, ext cab 8' box.

There are some things I like on the new truck, and some things I just hate.

Hazen,

My :2cents: fwiw, get the extended cab 3rd door and/or 4 door. You will be amazed at how much you will use and extended cab. My next truck will be an additional door extended cab or 4 door. I have a '92 Chevy that one of the younguns in Michigan is using right now and it's an extended cab. I use the hell out of that extra cab space.

What ever you do, stay away from the 6L, unless you have stock in your local gas company.

In 05 GM started to coat the inside of the body panels with galvanize, so go 05 or newer.

Before pulling the trigger, go take a look at a Nissan Titan Crew. I just looked at a 2006 with 73K on it, and even though I've been a Ford or Chevy guy I think I'm going to pop for it. I'm a big guy and if you want room this one has it....

To me it all boils down to personal preference. Myself I like a truck with an 8' box, so any version of extended cab makes the wheelbase too long for anywhere but wide open spaces. The pickup is my only 4 wheeled vehicle, so overall length is important.

I would also never own a Ford anything, and think GM makes a good pickup so if it suits your needs and the price is right, the choice is yours.

Not necessarily so. They do make crew's with 8' beds, but generally are pretty bare bones when it comes to creature comforts as they are in the loop for work trucks. Usually takes a special order to get one loaded up with all the amenities. I like the long bed too, but how often do we need the extra length?? Back to the Nissan. They make a bed extender that'll get you to 8' and you can carry that sheet of plywood. So the 5'6" bed is not a problem.

We bought an '05 Chev Silverado "Special Edition" extended cab 2x4 with the 4.8L engine 3 years ago. It had 53k kilometers on it then. We got it for $12500. Only put on 23,000 kms since. Nice truck; however, 2 wheel drive sucks when the roads are wet or snowy even with the limited slip diff. Also feel it has a crappy ride on bumpy roads. As for the extended cab, I wouldn't be without it or even a quad cab. Very handy having extra space back there for groceries 'n stuff or for when someone needs a ride. As for the box, it's got to be close to 7 ft coz when I haul a sheet of plywood, there isn't much sticking off the end of the tailgate when it's up. I'm guessing 6'6" box length.

Overall tho, it's been a great truck so far.

I have seen the extended cabs with an 8' box, but like i said it increases the length of the truck.. I like the option of hauling a snowmobile or motorcycle without dragging a trailer along...once again, personal preference. An 8' box with tailgate down is about 10', I can and have carried 16' planks...something that is much more difficult with a short box.

Hello: Wife and I went vehicle shopping again yesterday. We have owned an 06 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad cab 4x4 Big Horn addition since 09. My wife really liked the truck. It was her daily ride for a couple of years. It had 70k on it when we bought it and now had 110k. It now is more MY vehicle than hers. I like everything about the truck except the stiff ride. The newer 1500 Dodge pickups now have coil springs on the rear rather then leaf springs. The ride is much better. I am happy with the 4 doors and short box. Likely would never go back to anything less than 4 doors.

I owned Ford pickups in the 80's, Mazda pickups in the 90's and the Dodge line has been good for us also. Still have our 2000 Dodge Intrepid. But I have been looking at Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra. I really like the ride, but hard to find any newer pickup under 30,000 dollars.

It was just this past summer that I bought by 2011 Silverado, Extended cab, with 4 doors, 8' box, 4x4, 5.3L, K1500 and under 10K miles, and I got it for $22K.

They are out there, It took me 4 months of shopping to find this one.

Even though it is the same wheel base as the 96 that I had, this newer one has a much tighter turning radius than the old one.

I'm in the market for a truck also. In no hurry but keeping my eyes open. I love the Avalanche but have decided that I would feel better pulling the boat with a 3/4 ton. Keeping my eyes open for a 3/4 ton crew cab with short box and 4x4. Likely will go with Chevy again unless I find a great deal on something else. Won't buy a new one, probably an '07 or newer with less than 50,000 miles. It is not a daily driver so that would last us a long time.

I've had 4 Silverado's with the extended cab. Currently it's a 2013 and I just can't see myself without the extended cab feature. Sure, I've only got a 6.6' bed but with the tailgate down and a couple ratchet straps, they have always done what I wanted.

Matter of fact, my '05' Silverado short bed hauled 2400 lbs of Stainless Steel conveyor chain up to Toronto with no problem at all.

Well spent the weekend looking and I agree, got to have the extended cab at least. Tuff tho finding a honest deal. Test drove a nice quad cab dodge hemi that I really liked, but it just wasn't a good deal. It was a 04 and was asking 17k for it-they came down to 15 but they raped my trade in. Then the finance department didn't wanna go over 3 year loan on it cuz it was a 10 year old truck. Which put the payment just under $600...I don't wanna go that high just yet. Were gonna keep looking, but I can take my time, not gonna jump into a bad deal.. I hope. ( I suck at buying vehicles) I really do like the avalanche and Ive looked at a ton of them. And yours does look nice Eck. I may be interested, if I don't find something closer.
