I will need to get at least a pair of custom throttle cables made for the RSV Hybrid project. I am considering eliminating the throttle junction block interface and running new, longer cables directly from throttle to carbs. Motion pro will make a custom set of cables with needed ends on them for a reasonable price. The RSV throttle cables from the existing junction block will not fit the 1st gen carbs that are on bike. A pair of 1st gen cables from junction block are not long enough to reach carbs.

 

Bike will not have cruise control, so that seems to eliminate purpose of junction block. The early 1st gens without cruise did have a quad cable setup though, but with a different type of junction block. There does not appear to be a mechanical advantage to using junction block. Pulley in block has a 1:1 ratio.

 

The elimination of the junction block will eliminate the need to hide it on the Hybrid, due to the lack of the full fairings.

 

Any opinions on this. Sometimes the voices in my head are wrong !!

I thought the 83, and 84's had Longer cables, with no junction box ???

 

For some reason, but can't remember why--- Hmmmm

 

Check the parts Fitch for 83 and 84.

Attached is a picture of an 83 junction block. Rectangular block in middle of picture.

 

Cables at junction block had a different end on them than cruise equipped bikes.

I think primary reason for junction box on non-cruise, is because Both ends, throttle and carb, have rather large 90deg fittings that would not thread thru the bike very well. using the junction box allows one end of both cable sets to be straight, making easy threading thru the bike.

 

Guess decision depends if proper cables ends can be threaded thru frame on hybrid.

OK, now I'm wondering if the block doesn't offer a 2:1 leverage advantage????

I am going to go with the VMax junction box, much more compact than the Venture. And, I don't have to reinvent the wheel. Picture from parts fiche attached.

 

I can send motion Pro lower cables of a Venture, so they can see just what I need. I can sent them lengths from the RSV cables.

 

Be a better way to go, I will no doubt have carbs off several times to get jetting dialed in. I had to use 3" tall pods to be able to get air cleaners under fuel tank. I have put air correctors in carbs that VMax builder recommended over one of air jets in each carb. This bike will have a traditional style fuel tank, so it is cramped above carbs. Not enough room for a VBoost on this one. Will probably get NO2 at some point.

Sounds like a good road to follow, Gary.

 

I'd like to see it lined up against a new bike and then run a quarter mile...:whistling:

If I was not going to hook up the cruise I would make custom cables. I make cables all the time an have or can get the stuff to make them. You would want to still run the dual cables for safety concerns. If I can help let know.

I can send you cable ends with adjusters on them and a stock set of 1st gen cables. I will need a slightly longer set of the same set up as the 1st gen cables. Only should require outer jacket , wire and ferrules on the ends.

 

I am on plan C at this point. The VMax junction block uses different cable ends at the junction block than what the upper cables have. If I stick with the standard Venture junction block, it should be fairly easy to just get longer lowers. I now think that the junction block will be up under the RSTD tank and out of site. I had the cables routed incorrectly on the bike and thought junction block would be farther to front. Going by the cable routing in the RSV manual, junction block will not be seen. Seems a good idea to keep junction block to make carb removal easier. I am almost certain these carbs will be out and in several times to get jetting correct.

 

Picture attached of cables, short set is stock 1st gen, long set is stock 2nd gen and extra ends I have. I want to put an adjustable end on both the push & pull cables to help compensate for different configuration.

dingy looking at your breathers on the carbs . could you not make some kind of elbow so they go out to the sides instead of straight up? might make for more room for the tank?

The tanks lower edge is right at the top of diaphragm covers. The air cleaners will not be visible at all. There is a pocket up under the tank that allows room for the air cleaners to set.

 

Couple of pictures, but without carb rack installed when I had junk block in bike originally. Picture of tank is from front of bike without triple trees installed. The pocket is partially visible on either side of the triple tree neck. This extends length of tank.

 

Thanks for suggestion though, I am open to any ideas.
