Is the starter from a 91 Vmax a 4 brush?

Yes, it should be. Look on the outside of the starter and see if it has screws that go into the outside. The V-Max starter should not have screws.

91 might be a 2 brush. I think they went to 4 brush in 93.

Finally remembered to check parts fiche and it does look like change was made to 4 brush starter on VMax's in 1993. The brush set p/n's changed that year. Yamaha doesn't list numbers for housings. Couple of part fiches I checked all list same number for complete starter assy, but I think all they are showing replacement as a 4 brush.
