littlebitcrazy Posted November 1, 2013 #1 Posted November 1, 2013 I was on my way home the other day when I started to get a very strong smell of gas. I pulled over as soon as I smelled it. When I got off my bike I could see gas running down the left side from under the carburetors. Just as I reached for the fuel shut off it went up in flames. And was fully engulfed in flames before I could call 911. It only took me 10-15 seconds to call! The fire department was only 5 minutes down the road and they were in scene in about 15-20 minutes. Very scary at how fast it burned. I can't even imagine what would have happened if it caught fire while I was riding it. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/02/u8e6u3u9.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/02/ruvure6e.jpg http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/11/02/eqa3ataz.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
Ventureless Posted November 2, 2013 #2 Posted November 2, 2013 Sh^t. That is all I can really say. I have a leaking peacock right now and this makes me nervous now.
Phoneman1981 Posted November 2, 2013 #5 Posted November 2, 2013 Glad you were not hurt. Thanks for posting.
Marcarl Posted November 2, 2013 #6 Posted November 2, 2013 Good to hear you made it safely, too bad for the scoot, hope you had it insured and that the end turns out OK. As long as you're moving the fumes will dissipate away from you, that changes when you stop as you have noticed. So there isn't as much chance of a fire when you're moving as much as when your sitting still. Fuel leaks are still dangerous no matter if your moving or not.
Peder_y2k Posted November 2, 2013 #7 Posted November 2, 2013 We see this in cars also. Over a dozen car fires per day in the USA. -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA
playboy Posted November 2, 2013 #8 Posted November 2, 2013 I don't think anybody will be telling you your bike is dirty anymore it's toasty. Glad your OK I would be interested in those passenger floor boards for the cost of shipping. I have a project in mind for my wife and need a guinea pig.
aharbi Posted November 3, 2013 #10 Posted November 3, 2013 Sorry to see that, what a shame, how sad. Hope insurance does you right, maybe the next one will be just as nice or better.
KICKSHOT Posted November 3, 2013 #11 Posted November 3, 2013 Sorry about your bike. Note to self turn off gas before stopping in event of gas smell. I'm sure there's not much else you could have done but stop and get the heck off. Bikes can be repaired or replaced, people not so easily! kickshot
JohnT Posted November 3, 2013 #12 Posted November 3, 2013 Hmmm, maybe I won't cancel my full coverage insurance after all.
littlebitcrazy Posted November 3, 2013 Author #13 Posted November 3, 2013 Thanks everyone! Full coverage is a must for these kind of toys. I plan on taking what the insurance company is giving me along with my upcoming tax return and moving up to a Venture. Which is what I originally wanted but couldn't afford. As for selling parts off the burned out wreck, I would have only wanted the shipping costs covered. But the insurance company has already picked it up and took ownership of it and told me they give no option to buy it back. Hopefully I will be back on two wheels by spring time.
