oldgoat Posted October 30, 2013 #1 Posted October 30, 2013 well I went and pulled the engine on this as it was blown. it was my nephews bike. told him I would pull it apart and rebuild it. I have done these bikes before. have it all ready to put back together. had it bored. new piston and rings. but before I put this back together. what caused that bike to put a hole dead center of that piston? don't want to put it back in the bike fire it up and have it go boom again.
eusa1 Posted October 31, 2013 #2 Posted October 31, 2013 James, Your fuel mixture is too lean or the spark plug was run loose. 9 times out of ten it is a carb problem.
oldgoat Posted October 31, 2013 Author #3 Posted October 31, 2013 thanks mike I am going to do a carb rebuild on it as well. think I might just restore this old thing? paint the frame clean it up and repaint the whole bike again. found the stickers and stuff on ebay, man claims there original old stock? as big as I am not sure if I want to ride it. but might make a good woods bike when I go camping in MN?
midnightventure Posted October 31, 2013 #4 Posted October 31, 2013 Is it a 2 stroke? I blew a hole in a RD250 piston running about 95 down a steep hill when I was a teenager.
oldgoat Posted October 31, 2013 Author #5 Posted October 31, 2013 4 stroke. think the nephew messed with the carb? plus he said something about running a hotter spark plug? he was down shifting when it made a pop sound then no compression. I did a complete tear down on the engine. new gaskets and all. real pain splitting the case on this old thing. but got it done. should have seen the oil. think it was never changed since I did it back in 1985. this bike has been around the family since new. passed around and around. don't know how fast the little sucker can go? but the engine is all rebuilt. changed out them damn screws what a PIA . pb blaster and a lot of####@@@@$$ and them came out. impact drivers sure are nice. I have a step grand daughter I might teacher her to ride it.
Huggy Posted October 31, 2013 #6 Posted October 31, 2013 4 stroke. think the nephew messed with the carb? plus he said something about running a hotter spark plug? Yup that will do it!! Probably leaned it way out to get more speed, plus ran a hot plug!!! Been there and have done it when I was just a young'en.
