FROG MAN Posted February 26, 2008 #1 Posted February 26, 2008 Momamo's 99 has a cracked cowling and very bad scuffs behind the barons sticker. Inside the whole right side plastic tabs are gone so nothing to hold the screws in place. I have the right side secure with plastic wire ties. I'm not going to pay $450 for a new one so what are my options? I seen a used one sell on Ebay for $75 one time but probably never again. Maybe it's time for a beer 30 cowling hooter. Anybody any good at plastic repair. Getting close to paint time.

FROG MAN Posted February 26, 2008 Author #3 Posted February 26, 2008 Thanks roadkill. Venture friends sure like to spend other peoples money.:rotf:
Marcarl Posted February 26, 2008 #4 Posted February 26, 2008 Either use plastex, or grind up some ABS pipe, mix it with Acetone and build your new stuff as necessary.

Im trying to locate it again and if I find it I will send you the link.. found it...its up to $81.00 right now. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YAMAHA-ROYAL-STAR-VENTURE-XVZ-FAIRING_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35560QQihZ012QQitemZ220203796238QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Mariner Fan Posted February 26, 2008 #6 Posted February 26, 2008 I saw that one too. I see these on E-Bay every once in awhile.
FROG MAN Posted February 26, 2008 Author #7 Posted February 26, 2008 Thanks Eck. That one looks good. I scheduled a snipe bid we will see what happens.

Your welcome Frogman, Hey, if you do get the one off ebay, you could also try to fix the old one for a spare by possibly making a plastic repair using this method: http://wiki.vfrworld.com/index.php/Plastic_Repair
FROG MAN Posted February 26, 2008 Author #9 Posted February 26, 2008 Yea that was my thoughts. Momamo wants to get started on the paint soon. I can play with plastic repair later. Have you guys talked her out of PINK yet?
Yammer Dan Posted February 26, 2008 #10 Posted February 26, 2008 Guy just down the road from you don't do to bad on that stuff. He may start to get some time off from work soon...
FROG MAN Posted February 26, 2008 Author #11 Posted February 26, 2008 When he gets a garage I might send him some business. Need to get a 83 running first.
venturejockey Posted February 26, 2008 #12 Posted February 26, 2008 If you want to do the plastic solvent repair route. Go to Lowes and buy a can of ABS solvent (it has a blue label) clean the crack with acetone or MEK then lay some of that fiberglass mesh that is used for joining sheet rock together over the cleaned body part then start laying up layers of the solvent. The repair will become a fiberglass reinforced solid layer of ABS. Easy to do just takes a while for thick layers of the solvent to get fully hard.
86er Posted February 27, 2008 #13 Posted February 27, 2008 Another way is to use Devcon PlasticWelder (a two part epoxy) combined with fiberglass cloth. That worked very well when I was repairing the 86 after the Dragon slew it!

Rick Butler Posted February 27, 2008 #15 Posted February 27, 2008 Gerald, I have at least 4 good front cowlings (one 99 2 tone gray) in my attic most with small scatches but none that would not be fixed by a new paint job. I'd let you have it for a good price, especially since you made her buy her own right bag. Rick
FROG MAN Posted February 27, 2008 Author #16 Posted February 27, 2008 :rotf::rotf: Rick I paid for 99.9 % of that scoot. @#!^ if she wasn't gonna paint it PINK she might get another .1% out of me. Besides I'm enjoying this. Ladies get a better price for parts. In her eyes it's still 50/50.:rotf:

Was considering being nice and just using Hot Pink Pinstriping. Black - Hot Pink , Teal-Purple-Hot Pink, Blue-Hot Pink, Purple-Hot Pink, etc. Oh the opinions. By the way has anyone bought paint off of ebay to paint their bike. What was the results?
