etcswjoe Posted October 20, 2013 #1 Posted October 20, 2013 I was helping Art build a computer today when my cell phone rang and a very elderly lady asked if I was Joe and of course I said yes and she commenced talking to me for 20 minutes the strange part about it is I still have no clue who she was. The conversation was generic enough that I didn't know if it was a wrong number or not. When I got home I looked up the phone number and it came back to A Shrilly Schmidt in Haverhill MA I don't know who she was or where Haverhill is I hope that I at least made her feel better to talk to someone. Anyone else have anything like this ever happen to them?
bongobobny Posted October 20, 2013 #2 Posted October 20, 2013 You are waaaaay more polite than I am...
SilvrT Posted October 20, 2013 #3 Posted October 20, 2013 Anyone else have anything like this ever happen to them? ya ... but it wasn't a "generic" kinda convo
M61A1MECH Posted October 20, 2013 #4 Posted October 20, 2013 Yeah I remember way back in the 70's when I was in the Air Force, Stationed at Eglin AFB, if Fort Walton Beach. It was a Saturday afternoon I had one of the cars in some level of disrepair and of course needed it running again to report for duty on Monday, so I did not need any interuptions. The phone rings, wipe my hands go inside answer the phone, the voice on the other end asks "is so and so there", I politely say no and you may have the wrong number, to which I was informed that no she had dialed the correct number for the Eglin Yacht Club and demanded to speak to her husband so and so. After a bit of convincing she was persuaded that she had in fact possibly dialed the wrong number and hung up. So off I go diving back into my project and low and behold the phone rings again. So same drill wipe the hands go inside answer the phone and you guessed it, same lady, same question, same conversation, so this time I go one step further and actually look up the number for the yacht club and yes it was only one number different from mine. I give her the number and she is happy and hangs up. Back to the car I go and yep the phone rings again, this time when I answer it , I say "Good afternoon this is the Eglin Yatch Club how can I help you?" Don't you know it is the same lady asking for so and so. I very politely said "Just a moment I will have hime paged". Hold my hand over the mouth piece for an appropriate length of time and and tell her "I am sorry but he must not be here , no one answered the page." She was not happy but said thank you and hung up the phone. I went back to work and the phone never rang again the rest of the day. I can only image the ration of crap old so and so got when he came home from the Yatch Club.

Bob Myers Posted October 20, 2013 #6 Posted October 20, 2013 Obviously when people too lazy to look up a number and call directory assistance they ask for the department store Meijer and add an "S" to it, making it sound like my name, so the 411 op gives them a "Myers" in the yellow pages not caring if it is a machine shop, flower shop or the department store. I have had several people call 4 or 5 times (same person, same id number) asking for Housewares. After the 4th call I just told her "Please Hold", I put her on hold and go about my business. Next day she calls back and wants Housewares again. When we lived in Paris the phone was listed under my wife's name, and there was a black lady in town same name, spelled a little different who cut hair for a living. We would get phone calls for her all hours of the day and night wanting an appointment for a "fro" or dlocks. One woman insisted that she get her corn rows fixed today. Well this lady got an answer she never expected. I informed her that Teena M was forced to stop cutting hair. She of course ask why, and I gave her about 20 seconds of silence. When she ask why again I ask her if she had not heard the news. Of course she got all calm and ask what news. I informed her that Teena had cut off a little girls ear while trimming her hair and she wouldn't be cutting hair any longer. That my friends was the last call I remember getting for a haircut or perm. My business phone is one digit off from a very popular carry out sub shop so I get a lot of calls for a sandwich to go. I of course take their order and then call the correct number and place the order for them. Sometimes correctly, sometimes I'll add Jalapenos or Habanero to the sandwich
bongobobny Posted October 20, 2013 #7 Posted October 20, 2013 I had the same thing with a sub and pizza shop. It got so routine that I would answer the phone "Hello, this ISN'T Wings And Things!" Some customers had good answers, one even sounded disappointed...
Mike G in SC Posted October 20, 2013 #8 Posted October 20, 2013 Years ago, my Mom called me one Saturday morning to say my brother called her to say he had a most embarrassing night where his stomach came unglued during the night. She went in to giving some detail about the conversation,,,, first time since he was a kid he pooped the sheets. Maybe too much info to tell me that brother John was not going to visit cause of a stomach flu. Well at least she thought she called me,,,, wasn't me. But, like you, the fella kept it polite and listened to her story before she hung up. She called me a few minutes later and said,,, "Mike, did I call you a few minutes ago?" Been laughing at that one for years. Sure miss her. Think Betty White.
Guest Donna Shields Posted October 20, 2013 #9 Posted October 20, 2013 I guess most of us have stories like this. Mine started when we discovered that a local night club had a phone number one digit off from ours. One afternoon we got a call asking if there was a dress code. I just said, "Nope, come as you are!". My husband said I should be ashamed, misleading them like that to which I replied, "Honey, we have never had a dress code here", lol. The best one came late one night when a wife called looking for her husband. I was half asleep and tried to tell her she had the wrong number. She insisted I must be covering for Jim Bob so I said "Alright, you got me. He left about thirty minutes ago with some blonde." I'm sure old Jim Bob was in some really hot water when he finally got home that night.
spear Posted October 20, 2013 #10 Posted October 20, 2013 Many, many, MANY years ago I worked at a regional LEO centre that was a brand new building. This of course meant a new phone system and phone numbers. In one of the rooms in the forensics area where I worked was a phone that would occasionally ring and when answered there would be people inquiring about welfare payments. Turns out that extension was the former number of a federal government department that had been unlisted for about three years. Needless to say - depending on one's mood on the day - we had fun giving welfare advice. Ooh, we WERE bad!
icebrrg3rd Posted October 21, 2013 #11 Posted October 21, 2013 Before the cell phone companies would let you transfer your number, you would get a new number every time you changed carriers. I got a call and they asked for Mike, I said "Sorry, this is my new phone number, I have no idea who Mike is." "Well, do you know his new number?" -Andrew
Flyinfool Posted October 21, 2013 #12 Posted October 21, 2013 My parents phone number had all of the same digits as a local pizza joint. Just reverse the digits on each side of the dash. Of course most of the call came in right around dinner time. It did not take long before they just started to take the rush carryout orders. I'm sure that pizza joint had a lot of POed customers when they got there and there was no pizza. Since it was a national chain with around a dozen shops in the metro area. It was probably taking a lot of time to call around to try to figure out which store the person called.
IronMike Posted October 22, 2013 #13 Posted October 22, 2013 If it's someone I don't know, I ask for a credit card number right away. When they say what? I say yes, his time is valuable and I need a credit card to connect you to him. And I insist again. If it's someone I know they make it obvious. If not, they get all protesty. LOL Now if it's a We want to sell you a car warranty type call, I just say I had no idea you would cover a 1971 Ford Pinto of course I WANT it! That thing has the original tires on it! Hello? Hello?
Hazenson Posted October 22, 2013 #14 Posted October 22, 2013 Ok I have to give you a lil background on this one. My real full name is Hazen Leroy Holmes, no Im a american and Im white, its a weird name I know and Ive heard all the jokes about it. My mom came up with it by naming me after both my granddads. Well as you can guess- I have never ever had a problem with anyone having the same name as me. But about 10 , 12 years ago, I got the strangest e-mail- was from Hazen Leroy Holmes to Hazen Leroy Holmes. The first thing I thought is how did I do that? But the more I checked I found out that it was from way up in canada somewhere. And the guy was asking me if I had got some of his e-mail cuz he had been getting some of mine. Well I had to call this guy up to believe it and sure enough he did exsist, AND He named his son Hazen and his son named his son Hazen rofl I couldnt believe it. Since then the name has become more popular, I even have a nephew now with the exact same name.
Dragonslayer Posted October 22, 2013 #15 Posted October 22, 2013 Years ago, I received a call asking if I was "my true real full name". Not being a good liar and not believing I was wanted by any law enforcement agencies I replied, Yes. The caller went on to explain that he was looking for his biological Father. Apparantly he was about to get married and wanted his biological Father to be part of the ceremony. He told me his name and assured me he wanted nothing more than that. After following the only clues he had received from his Mother, which he admitted were sketchy his search had led him to me via this phone call. At that moment, I'm thinking that it could be possible because I was known to get around some, (a lot), back in the day. As I'm racking my brain trying to figure out the possiblilities, I asked the caller what was his mother's name. He answered Sarah, something or another. I reconized the name Sarah and had dated more than one Sarah that I could recall but, the last name drew a blank. That didn't surprise me either because truth be told, there were a lot of girls I had dated that I didn't remember their last names. I guess I shouldn't reveal that unfattering fact about myself but, it is true. So trying to narrow down the choices I asked a series of questions regarding where, and when. The where was possible but somehow the when didn't seem to make sense, the math didn't add up. I asked him how old he was and he replied, Thirty. At the time I was only Thirty eight. I did get started early early but not that early. After explaining the math, I told the caller that I would be glad to come to his wedding anyway. Inquiring, Would there be an open bar and would there be a lot of available single women there? Click ...... Dial tone
