Don't know about U.S. warranty(as everything seems different between our two countries) but here in Ontario Canada my dealers told me that many people do pull trailers BUT if there is damage done that mama Yamaha might not repair under warranty as they are not made to pull trailers. Pretty sure owners manual says this also.

For the best answer I wouldn't check with a dearler. I'd call Y directly. I remember this subject came up a few years ago, but.... I can't remember the outcome... :confused07:

Warranty Questions

Q. Will the warranty be void or cancelled if i do not operate or maintain my new motorcycle exactly as specified inthe owner's manual?

A. No. The warranty on a new motorcycle cannot be "voided" or "cancelled".

However, if a particular failure is caused by operation or maintenance other than as shown in the owner's Manual, that failure may not be covered under warranty.

My RSTD Owner's manual does not specifically state not to tow a trailer, however it does state don't exceed the load limit or add bulky accessories that can affect the handling steering suspension etc. The argument could be made that a trailer is a bulky accessory that affects the handling suspension and steering of the motorcycle.

That being said, Yamaha fixed Zip Code Dave's engine under warranty after investigating the failure, and he pulls a trailer, has accessories, and was using non specified oil and an automotive oil filter IIRC at the time of his engine failure. Don't remember if he was pulling a trailer at the time it failed, but his trailer hitch was on it when it was getting fixed.

So could they deny the claim, possibly. Will they?? In all likelyhood, probably not depending on the circumstances, type and extent of the failure.

I think that depends on the dealer you bought the bike from. They usually decide if the repair is going to be covered or not. Usually based on how common the failure is. :backinmyday:

On my 07, the service department told me that my warranty, would not be valid, if I installed, my hitch. ( I told them , they were full of SH#*, they serviced my bike right up to date they received the bike at the shop, ( Not however, my purchase date) the low life scum.

Randy,

When I had my 2nd Gen RSV, I pulled a trailer.. However I kept the rear frame (brace) bar that is removed when installing the trailer hitch.

I figured, if I ever had to take my 2nd Gen to the Dealer, I would just remove the trailer hitch and install that rear frame (brace) bar back in its place and then take it to the dealer.

I purchased my 05 RSV new. Yamaha replaced the rear end five times under warranty. The rear end was going bad every 5000 miles. When the fifth rear end was installed by a factory rep he asked me if I pulled a trailer. I told him I did not which was the truth. Nothing else was ever said.

Both my 2006 RSTD and 2009 RSV had shocks replaced under warranty.

And both had hitches on them.

In fact,,,, during rear tire changes, my dealer noticed the oil on the shocks and started the warranty parts order before I had picked the bikes up.

AND,,, I have a GREAT dealer. Extreme Sports Yamaha, Sumter, SC

My 08 had the rear pumpkin and the clutch basket changed under warranty at Pioneer Motorsports. Mechanic and I talked about the hitch and trailer that was it.

I think the guys torque wrench was broke when I needed to remove the rear brake caliper, jeepers it was tight.
