Marcarl Posted October 18, 2013 #5 Posted October 18, 2013 Looks like it got a bit hot. Can we see the other side?
Flyinfool Posted October 18, 2013 #6 Posted October 18, 2013 It sure looks like it got a bit warm. That coil getting hot would be from an excessive power draw on which ever circuit it was monitoring. (I don't remember which coil was for which circuit. CRS syndrome) As long as non of the traces on the back side are damaged, that coil getting hot most likely will not damage anything. If that is from your bike, you will want to find out what was pulling so much power to make it get that hot. A fuse should have blown before it got that hot.
bongobobny Posted October 18, 2013 #7 Posted October 18, 2013 Yup, the coil around the magnetic reed switch sure got hot! How it works: As long as there is current flowing a magnetic field is present around the coil. This causes the contacts in the glass reed switch to close. Depending on how the circuit is configured it will either turn on or turn off an indicator...
bkuhr Posted October 18, 2013 #8 Posted October 18, 2013 Looks like the double coil that should be for the tail light circuit. Check the solder connections on the other side are not melted. I would probably reflow them anyways.
pmelah Posted October 19, 2013 Author #9 Posted October 19, 2013 here is the other side this is a cluster i bought in GA last October before my accident on the 99 RSTD im just now getting around to breaking it down i have led on the brake lights and running lights so i figured i would do the jumpers on this one so it would be a quick swap out to shut off the warning light but now im getting worried about it i don't know if it works and don't want to waste my time on it if it doesn't work especially after a long grueling day of work looking for a job which i was not successful at today but tomorrow looks promising
Marcarl Posted October 19, 2013 #10 Posted October 19, 2013 Nothing staring me in the face there,,, but then what do I know,, I'll let the experts give their opinion.
pmelah Posted October 19, 2013 Author #11 Posted October 19, 2013 i will just take the one on the bike and do the jumpers and while im there stick this one in to see if it does work if it does then i have a spare if not then in the trash but i will have to re solder a couple of joints on the board that look like cold solder joints
