Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 #1 Posted October 15, 2013 OK I swapped out my valves then put it all back together started it. Set the butterflies all to the same spacing. Sounded good but high revs, needed to sync carbs. Could not lower revs with the idle speed screw had it backed right out. Closed the butterflies a little got the revs down to 1000 rpm. hooked up the carb sync gauges. Then it all went to rat SH*T! I can get my revs down using the idle screw but as soon as it drops to 3000 rpm the tach stops working! Cant figure it out what do I do! My gauges may be screwed up I think but it drives me crazy. I can get it to idle right down but the tach don't register. I rev it up and the tach works above 3000 rpm.
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #2 Posted October 15, 2013 I'm going to bed now, this thing is giving me a migraine! Going to pull the plugs and make sure they are all firing tomorrow.
Prairiehammer Posted October 15, 2013 #3 Posted October 15, 2013 Double check the "boost sensor" harness connector for clean and tight connection. Double check the TCI harness for cleanliness and correct and tight connection. Did you relocate the TCI while you had the top end disassembled for the valve check? Check that all vacuum hoses are replaced properly. Back off all the synchronization screws all the way. I suspect something was dislodged or incorrectly reconnected/installed after the valve check.
Marcarl Posted October 15, 2013 #4 Posted October 15, 2013 Sounds like a road trip to me,,,, let's set up a time.
Condor Posted October 15, 2013 #5 Posted October 15, 2013 Back off all your sync screws and resync. Sounds like you have the sync screws set too tight, and #2 carb is no longer controlling idle.
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #6 Posted October 15, 2013 Condor did that and I agree that #2 is not controlling idle. Prairiehammer will double check all the things you have mentioned! Marcarl you are probably right! Going out side to stare at the bike now! Going to see if that works!!!
saddlebum Posted October 15, 2013 #7 Posted October 15, 2013 (edited) Better bring out a chair and a beer or two.......sometimes it requires a good long stare. While you are staring recheck your vacuum connections and make sure you have no leaks on the tubes that secure the carbs to the heads. Edited October 15, 2013 by saddlebum

While you are staring recheck your vacuum connections and make sure you have no leaks on the tubes that secure the carbs to the heads. Going to recheck that also! Going to give them all a little turn and see what happens. Could it be a problem with the TCI? I had this happen when I first got the bike running. Wouldn't idle properly or anything. Left it alone for a day then it was fine. Got the lawn chair out, good day to stare at the bike!!
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #9 Posted October 15, 2013 OK in the garage now! Tigtened up #2 and #4 on the engine intakes. Also gave the intake side a little air intakes. Bike started idle at 1000rpm. Afraid to try sync again incase I screw it up again. Will give it a go! Sent from my BlackBerry 9300 using Tapatalk
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #10 Posted October 15, 2013 Lost my tach again as soon as I tried to set the vac sync. Could the module that the vac hose goes into be faulty? There is vacuum on the line when the gauge is not working. Sent from my BlackBerry 9300 using Tapatalk
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #11 Posted October 15, 2013 What is this thing? Sent from my BlackBerry 9300 using Tapatalk
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #12 Posted October 15, 2013 Never mind I found it! Sent from my BlackBerry 9300 using Tapatalk
Huggy Posted October 15, 2013 Author #13 Posted October 15, 2013 Still not getting anywhere will get out the propane and look for air leaks. Sent from my BlackBerry 9300 using Tapatalk
Prairiehammer Posted October 15, 2013 #14 Posted October 15, 2013 (edited) The tachometer gets its signal from the TCI. If you are losing the tach, check the TCI connections, wiring, etc. Also check the SIGNAL fuse for good connections at the fuse clips. If everything was functioning normally before you dived into the valve clearance check, then logic says that something was changed or disrupted as a result of those things you messed around with when removing or re-installing the valve covers. Just sayin'. Edited October 15, 2013 by Prairiehammer

Huggy Posted October 16, 2013 Author #16 Posted October 16, 2013 OK short of tearing my carbs apart I have gone over everything!!! Done everything possible!!! Now could the carbs themselves cause this problem. I'm kind of leaning to a problem with the TCI what are your, as in anyone who reads this, thoughts on this?
