I didn't quite get the kickstand fully extended on my 84 VR, and me and the VR did a slow-mo laydown. I was able to pick her back up within a minute, but now, when I try to start it, I get lights only; no fuel pump clicks or starter activation. The headlight dims when I hit the starter button, but nothing else happens. Did I disturb the tip-over switch? I haven't had time to do any diagnostics yet; just hoping someone has had this happen to them.

Thanks

Hey Dave,

Sorry to hear about the Slow-Mo Drop. The first week I got my 87'VR, I wrangled that puppy to the ground TWICE! I'm very glad you weren't injured! Here's a short list of things I would check:

1) Remove the False Tank Cover and check the BATTERY to see if you dumped the ACID out of the battery! (If you have an AGM battery, this will not be a problem!)

2) Disconnect the NEG. Battery terminal to see if the tip over switch will disengage. (reset)

3) Put the bike on the center stand, and work the side stand up and down. (there is a side stand switch as well, a little WD40 will help here)

4) Check the KILL Switch. (as Venturous mentioned) You may need to remove the two screws, separate the switch body halves. (this would be a good time to clean, grease, and reassemble the switch)

Getting the bike on the center stand is the first thing I would do, so that the bike will be strait up and down, to reset the tip over switch.

If these "quick check" items don't do it, then you will need to start tracing battery voltage from the battery to the starter solenoid, to the starter motor, etc.

Hope this helps, and again, I glad you weren't hurt! :thumbsup2:

To the best of my recollection there is no "Tip" switch on that model.

Depending on how long it was down, you might want to consider pulling the plugs before you try and start it. If you managed to get oil up into the top of a cylinder, you might have a hydro-lock situation. You could also end up bending a connecting rod. Or worse yet, putting a rod through the block.

An 84 VR, as he noted, should have a tip over switch. His symptoms still sound like he tripped the kill switch to me.

Thanks for all your helpful comebacks! After I got it back on two wheels, I rolled it in the garage and put it on the center stand. Lights, but no action.........Came back out the next day and it started right up. Must have been a stuck tip over switch.

Must have been the tip over switch cause all us 1st and 2nd geners always check the kill switch. So silly to even mention it right ?! (and embarrassing to admit) hmmmm..... :whistling:

Does 2nd gen have tip over switch ?

When I dropped mine the engine kept running, I turned it off.

My 06 I believe does I have "used" it a few times already....

Yep... Had oop's with both the '07 and the '99 and they both stopped running.

The 1st Gen has a "Tip Over Switch"??? I just learned something new today, thank you. But now I'm scared...these bikes handle so well that its easy to scrape the pegs and now I've got to worry about the Tip Over Switch cutting out the ignition just because I leaned over too far!!! :hihi:

Not to worry, you have to literally have it on it's side! Just down to the crash bars does not trip it! Don't ask how I know this...
