here's the issue my '96 royal star, recently started under moderate to hard acceleration bikes jumps out of first into neutral just as i'm goin to shift. Maybe falls out of first is better description. If i keep the lightest pressure from my toe on the shifter it won't leave gear.

One thing I noticed was that the heel toe shifter has very little free play when in first gear. I remember it having a bit more (slop) give when in gear, and my 07 RSV seems to have more freeplay in the shifter also. could the shift rod have bent or gone out of adjustment?

didn't want to start monkying around with it til i got some more input

Without trying to shift does it jump out of first when you pull in on the clutch lever, or jump out when rolling on and off the throttle?? If not you might adjust the toe position a little higher to give the toe a bit more room....

no only under hard accek

It sounds like the first gear dog may be rounded off a bit. 'Nother question. When you down shift do you ease it into gear slowly, or aggressively??

Simple answer is it's in the tranny and it's not really a gear. If you take a look at the tramission page in the online parts catalog #D2 Part #20, it will give you a better idea of what's going on. If the transmission is baby'd when shifting, the leading edge of the dog or disc that engages into a matching impression in the matching gear face, the leading edge will start to round off and eventually will start to jump out of gear under hard excelleration. You can feel the action if you try to engage a gear slowly. It's much like what goes on in the old 1stGen pre-'85 bikes because of a weak washer. The leading edge can be rounded off in much the same way with the soft engagement although it's not very common with second gens. Try a hard shft into 1st. After a while it will stop jumping... I actually have gotten dogs to seat doing this.... I think what happens is the hard shift beats the leading edge bak into a sharp edge again and engage deeper in the recess. I remember one of the members actually splitting the case and undercutting the dog for a more possitive engagement.
