I have a friend who wants me to take her on a bike ride when I go back home for the weekend but I am worried that since she suffers from seizures it may be too risky. I once heard flashing light will set off a seizure and since riding by trees this time of year reminds me of a strobe light it would be even more dangerous.

You need to talk to her about this. Express your concerns. Many peoples seizures are well controlled with medication.

I get the impression her's are not well controlled yet since she is not allowed to drive. Will definitely have to have a good talk with her.

I ride with a buddy that has seizures. He knows beforehand when they are coming on. There are many types with many triggers. YES. Talk with her and see.

So far my buddy has refused to ride on questionable days and there has been no issues.

Thank you for considering taking her. AND being smart enough to ask.

I have MS and sometimes have had seizures.

now with proper medication I take . I have not had a seizure in over 3 years.

on bright days I wear a dark visor on the helmet. when I drive at night I try not to look right into the on coming headlights. not easy to do. if she is on good medication she should be ok. yes I can tell if I am going to get one. if I don't feel right I wont ride.

Lighted spaces alternating with blanks like passing a picket fence can cause whats called "flicker fits" if one is susceptible. I am not myself, but can see how that would screw with someone. I was waiting at a light next to a diesel truck that had big chrome panels over the rear of the huge upswept pipes. The cover on my side was a little loose and moved with the pulses of the trucks engine at a fairly low rate of speed reflecting the sun glare differently with each cycle. That was really freaking annoying and I recall thinking about it could probably set someone off.

Joe,

As mentioned, it was /is very smart of you to ASK....and to be so cautious.

I am left with this question though..Do you know what to do if she does have seizure?

I would suggest that if/when you do speak to her about her seizures and riding, I would include in that conversation what you should do if she does have one, and retain her family's phone number if you need to make a call.

Only dealt with a couple of seizures, not sure I would Know what to do if she had one on the bike besides pull over as fast and safely as possible.
