Condor Posted October 4, 2013 #1 Posted October 4, 2013 So I pulled the carbs off the '99 (California bike), and comparing them to the set of '08's I picked up from Pinwall I see that the air hoses...I think??... shown in the little inset of the carb parts diagram page are pluged off on the '08's. So I suspect the line goes to the smog valve mounted to the lower frame of the '99. Question??? What would happen if I left the line disconnected from the carbs, and just pluged the end. The lines connect to only 2 of the carbs. #2 and #3, and the bibs look like they come out of the bowls. Are they maybe vapor recovery lines, or?? Would this also disable the smog system?? I'm in the dark... Need some advice here....
V7Goose Posted October 4, 2013 #2 Posted October 4, 2013 You've pretty much nailed it. As far as I know, the only difference is those two vent lines that go to the charcoal canister on the CA fruitcake models. Now I happen to be very big on NOT bypassing any emission controls, especially if the proposed modification does not improve the engine operation in any way, but I'll be honest here - I just cannot imagine how only venting TWO of the four carbs to the charcoal canister actually helps much of anything other than complying with the plethora of idiotic California laws that contributed to driving me out of that horrible place! (Sorry, I just couldn't help editorializing on this one.) Anyway, I would not hesitate to use the normal carbs from all the other 2nd gen bikes and simply not connect the "special" fruitcake vent lines. Goose
Black Owl Posted October 4, 2013 #3 Posted October 4, 2013 Hey, we don't call it the weird coast for nutten yah know....
mega2500 Posted October 4, 2013 #4 Posted October 4, 2013 Just rebuilt a set of 1989 carbs that had all 4 carb vents tied together then to a smog controll and then to a tee that tied the tank vent and the canister together after all was reinstalled the bike would load up when sitting {not running} so I removed the line from the tee to the canister and extended that line off the tee below the bike to vent as all other ventures do and no more flooding when first engine is shut down still good after 1000mi so I do not think you will hurt anything but someones feelings with the Cal EPA {I could vent on this also}

The C.A.R.B. board are not the only idiots we have in this state. I'm sorry to say I live in Sacramento, and this place is full of them. Thanks for the help...

At least you can ride year round.
