I was looking at some older posts and front brake caliper upgrades. One said that the R6 calipers are a big improvement in stopping power, no need to upgrade the master cylinder. These are available in the used market for a reasonable price. Does anyone know for sure that these are a direct bolt on? If not, what would be a wise choice bolt on upgrade?

Rich,

On your '08 RSTD they are a direct bolt on, I installed a set on Zipcodes '06 RSTD. You will notice the difference without changing the master cylinder. It's a smoother braking action, I have a set on my '86 1st gen with Stainless lines and it was a great difference, go ahead and get a pair and bolt them right on.

Do I use the R6 brake pads? Are my 08 RSTD pads compatible?

Totally different pads, you'll have to use the the ones specifically for the R6/R1 depending on what caliper you get. I believe that the R1/R6 is the same pad, but I'm not positive.
