OK what is the proper position for doing a valve check? the Manual says the pistons have to be top dead center. But other members say put the cam lobes 180 degrees opposite the cam shims. Which is right? I have done both and I have come out with the same reading on all the shims except 2. I get a tight 0.16mm where I had 0.15mm before on them. How should I proceed with this with this? I don't want to be to tight on those 2 nor do I want to be to loose!:backinmyday:

.01 mm is only .0004 of an inch, I don't see an issue. I did mine cam lobe 180 from the shim and set them on the high side of the tolerance.

:sign yeah that:

If it's an exhaust valve I might go down a shim size, especially if you go a long time before checking them. On an intake I'd let it be.

I have some shims here that will allow me to drop enough to bring them into mid range for that valve so I'm looking good. :detective:

I have always checked my clearances 180 out, on every vehicle internal combustion motor I have owned. I know there is the "Yamaha super secret way" that the manual talks about, but I dont buy into that with this machine. I'm with Carl above, exhaust change it, intake let it ride....
