What exactly is the function of the little filter assembly, item #21 in the image below? Does it ever need replacing? I see the bottom part of the hose just dangles beside the oil filter.

Remember, I am new to the world of maintaining my own bike.

thanks...

Ummmm.... it is in the original post... it is all hose except for the filter shown in the item number... I can blow air through the hose in both directions.. this is why I asked its' purpose...seems to me you could just eliminate the filter assembly as long as it is allowing air in both directions... Would be nice to know what the parameters are for this thing... ride safe!!-Wayne

It's a check valve to allow oil mist collected in the air box to drain out, but not let in dirty air . If you can blow through it in both directions, it's KAPUT and should be replaced or cleaned/soaked in seafoam shaken free and rechecked.

So I went to remove the hoses from the filter assy in order to give it a good soak in some seafoam. Unfortunately, the ears came off the assembly while trying to twist off the hoses. :( Ordered another, and since the hose and piping were no longer pliable, I ordered those also... The pipe is back ordered so I plugged the end of the pipe containing the broken off ear of the assy with a bolt. I will try boiling the end of it to soften it up when the new filter arrives..In the meantime, I figured after riding for the day, I can then unscrew the bolt allowing any draining which may be needed.

Unless you over fill the crankcase when you do an oil change, the collection of enough mist to make it drip from the hose takes quite a long time. Every few rides would be fine.
