CUCARACHA004 Posted September 21, 2013 #1 Posted September 21, 2013 let me start out by saying that this venture web site is the best. now, I have a problem with the fuel overflow vent on the carb's. there is no hose's coming from the overflow, I know the hose goes to the overflow, but where does the other end of the hose go to??? I don't want my bike to catch fire, and go boom... how long is the hose's??
Marcarl Posted September 21, 2013 #2 Posted September 21, 2013 Ya we know, but never do anything about it. The hoses are short, less than 2 feet, and hang out the back right above the rear headers, I guess that is so because then no fuel will hit the ground,,, but then the carbs should not overflow anyways. You can always put longer ones on, but be careful where you route them, you don't want them to catch fire!

Venturous Randy Posted September 21, 2013 #4 Posted September 21, 2013 My overflow hoses extend down to about the center stand. On the side stand, I can easily see the tips hanging down. Not sure what you mean by; "hang out the back right above the rear headers, I guess that is so because then no fuel will hit the ground". In 140,000 miles, I have had an overflow problem one time and it dumped out fuel right in front of the rear tire. To fix it, I pulled the inlet hose and blew some air into the tube on that carb and the problem went away. RandyA
Snaggletooth Posted September 21, 2013 #5 Posted September 21, 2013 From Page 52 of the 1983-1985 Service Manual XVZDL Supplement: There ya go. There are wire loops or retainers on the framework where you route the hoses through to keep them in place so they end up under the bike just in front of the rear tire. If installed carefully and in order you can see the ends easliy and tell right away which carb is bleeding out. Saved me a lot of time back in the early days when i was fighting bad floats. You certainatly want them to end up well under the motor and pipes. From my Droid wherever I may happen to be at any given moment.
Prairiehammer Posted September 21, 2013 #6 Posted September 21, 2013 I've checked the hose length on my spare 1983 carbs and the front carb hose(s) are 20½" and the rear carb hoses are 16½". Inside diameter is approximately ¼". There is a wire loop welded to a frame cross member just in front of the rear shock mount. The hoses are routed over another frame cross member and through this wire loop. On my unmolested 1983 the over flow hose ends are not visible, but they end right at the rear shock upper mount. The hose ends one sees when looking in front of the rear tire and just to the rear of the suspension linkage linkage is the battery vent line, the fuel tank vent line and the fuel filler overflow catch basin drain.

Yep. I would have said that as well,,, or something like that,,, but you said it better.
dacheedah Posted September 21, 2013 #8 Posted September 21, 2013 If it's overflowing you have a stuck float, try tapping the bowl with the handle of a screwdriver or seafoam soak
