Valve cover!!!

OK How much stuff do I have to remove to get my valve covers OFF. All the plastic is off and I have loosened the gas tank. Any thing else? Last time I had the gas tank, carbs and air intake off. :confused24: I understand that I can use 2nd gen valve cover gaskets. Does it mater what year or engine size? I know nothing about 2nd gen bikes.:whistling:

Don't have to do gas tank, carbs or air intake. It is a job wiggling them in and out of there. I thought there was a thread on it?? 2nd Gen gaskets are easier to use. Plastic above cylinder heads probally have to come out. Its just fight it in and out of there. Move it the right way and it will come out. I can't remember anything holding it in just a tight fit??

I replied to your PM.

 

There is a good chance you'll need the rubber donuts around the cover bolts. They act as a spring to put the proper down force on the cover. After 20 years or so they dry out and loose their elasticity, resulting in the cover not being held down tight.

 

They're not particularly expensive, but it really adds up when you by 16 of them.

Hmmm,.... are you working on a G1 or G2 bike??? I am confused...

MiCarl is right. Replace those shoulderbolt gaskets and you won't have to get in there again for a while. There are tricks to slowing down leaks on these but better to go ahead and replace them while you are in there.
