Huggy Posted September 19, 2013 #1 Posted September 19, 2013 OK now that I got rid of the snapping noise, exhaust leak, what kind of noises should I hear or not hear from a running 86 VR? You see my other bike is a 83 XJ750K and it is a noisy bike. If you dont here the tapping of the valves opening and closing they are to tight. So that's what I'm asking. Should I hear any kind of engine noises, should the water pump be quiet or make some kind of sound and how about wine should there be any kind of wining from any thing? I figure the engine will noisier with all the plastic off.
kevin-vic-b.c. Posted September 19, 2013 #2 Posted September 19, 2013 The 86 when running correctly you should hear nothing, maybe the sound of police cars trying to catch you but nothing else. As I described it original, it feels like you are sitting on a well tuned Cameron engine. Smooth, quiet and powerful.

I don't hear the police cars because the radio is always crankin out "I CAN'T DRIVE 55", BY SAMMY HAGAR.
Huggy Posted September 19, 2013 Author #4 Posted September 19, 2013 OK I'll keep that in mind ALL should be quiet!!!!
dingy Posted September 19, 2013 #5 Posted September 19, 2013 It will be 'noisy' when first started. I doubt there would be much noise from the cam/shim buckets even if they were out somewhat. Mostly it seems to be some cam chain noise, which tapers off as motor warms up. I don't notice any water pump noise. Being a water cooled motor, tolerances are tighter in most places as motor doesn't get as hot as an air cooled one. Gary
bongobobny Posted September 19, 2013 #6 Posted September 19, 2013 Uhhhh, it goes vroom vroom when you twist the throttle...
EasyRider Posted September 19, 2013 #7 Posted September 19, 2013 Every now and then I see a first gen going past at high speeds But they do have a strange quirk.... They stop at all post offices???? I think it is because they constantly need replacement parts. Meanwhile I just turn up My ZZ Top so as not to hear the crying that seems to come from the rider not the bike as they come out of the post office. When you enjoy the ride you are not in a hurry to get there and get off....2nd gen forever or until I cant buy cassettes
Huggy Posted September 20, 2013 Author #8 Posted September 20, 2013 Uhhhh, it goes vroom vroom when you twist the throttle... Definatly goes VROOOMM VROOOOOOMMMMM!!! But I do need to recheck my valve shims! Just not sure I did it right!
Yammer Dan Posted September 20, 2013 #9 Posted September 20, 2013 The sound you hear from the 2nd Gens will grow fainter as they fade away to the rear!!
Peder_y2k Posted September 20, 2013 #10 Posted September 20, 2013 They stop at all post offices???? I think it is because they constantly need replacement parts. Naaahh, we stop because we are receivng money orders. The more we stop, the more we get...at least that's why I stop........... -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '88VR
Wizard765 Posted September 20, 2013 #11 Posted September 20, 2013 I was at your house the other day with my 84 and I remember you and the missus having a listen. Your 86 should sound the same unless you have aftermarket exhaust. The missus really liked it if I recall..
Huggy Posted September 20, 2013 Author #12 Posted September 20, 2013 Ya Wayne your bike did sound good. BUT I'm not sure I've done the valve shim correctly. It's more involved then the XJ valve shim check. I'm pulling the covers off again and have new donuts ordered.
saddlebum Posted September 20, 2013 #13 Posted September 20, 2013 Uhhhh, it goes vroom vroom when you twist the throttle... all I get is ZOOM ZOOM -----on the other hand the second gens behind me might hear VROOM VROOM coming from my bike as Or would that be more of a crack when I break the sound barrier.

tomephil Posted September 20, 2013 #16 Posted September 20, 2013 If your on a road trip and you notice after a gas stop that it is unusually quiet, make sure you didn't leave the wife at the last gas stop. Just sayin is all...
cowpuc Posted September 20, 2013 #18 Posted September 20, 2013 So would that be a bad thing? It would if she was carrying the trip money supply ,, or if she was the one mechanically inclined ,, OR if she was the muscle of the two - as in wait till she gets her hands around someones scrawny little neck...
Huggy Posted September 21, 2013 Author #19 Posted September 21, 2013 You do have a point there...................
JohnT Posted September 21, 2013 #20 Posted September 21, 2013 Just sayin, Jetson-mobile sound. Or is mine just weird?

tomephil Posted September 22, 2013 #22 Posted September 22, 2013 Oh SleeperHawk.......just saying!! Ooops, didn't mean to stir anything up.
cowpuc Posted September 22, 2013 #23 Posted September 22, 2013 Ooops, didn't mean to stir anything up. Come on admit it,, yes ya did!! Only usually it seems like its the "Yammerdan and Skid Show" that gets the pot churning around here...
KIC Posted September 22, 2013 #24 Posted September 22, 2013 Carefull with those shoulder bolts. They break easy don't they Kic?? Uhm.that would Be a big 10-4. Yea ...the snap of a shoulder head bolt breaking will send shivers down your spine. Get a 10mm ratchet box end for the head bolts. Worth every penny for that job.
bongobobny Posted September 22, 2013 #25 Posted September 22, 2013 OK next stupid question! If tin whistles are made of tin, what do they make fog horns out of??
