Hi Folks,

I am looking at maybe purchasing a 1978 Yamaha XS 750 as a project for the winter, I don't have any previous experience with this model. I have had a Honda 750k and a Suzuki GS750 in my younger years as well as a RD 350, but none of my former riding pals ever had one of the XS 750's so I can't even go on stuff that I remember (which at times is not the best lol).

I am wondering if anybody has had any experience with these bikes from what I have read on line they are a decent machine, I am looking at just bringing it back to a reliable ride for myself and maybe down the road looking at a mild cafe setup. This one only has as per the add about 32000km on it and other then torn seat and being dirty looks pretty good, and the asking price is workable. I am hoping to go and take a look at it in the next few days.

Any info would be appreciated.

Now time to spend a nice September Saturday the way it is meant to be..........going for a ride on the Venture.

You may want to check out the XS forums, I know there are a couple that folks talk about here. The XS is a good bike, my 1st Yamaha was a '79 XS 1100 special. They are a pretty basic inline 4 cylinder, I'm quite sure you'll have to get into the carbs. As I understand it, parts are pretty scarce, so you'll have to keep that in mind and be resourceful at times....

The Yamaha XS750 in-line tripple has a reputation for sudden seizure and is not cost effectively repairable. Something to do with the crankshaft. Don't leave home without your cell phone.

I suggest you look at a different project...........

They also had a tendency to stretch the primary chains and was one of the big reasons that Yamaha went to the gear drive primary.

I had a 77 XS750 triple. It was a good bike but I ended up trading it in on a 80 Maxim I 650 when they came out.

Hope that helps.
