mralex714 Posted September 9, 2013 #1 Posted September 9, 2013 Yesterday my bike caught fire. The best I can tell is it was because the overflow tubes were too short and routed incorrectly. There is no body damage but lots of melted wire insulation. The bike will run but the number 2 carb is overflowing.
bongobobny Posted September 9, 2013 #3 Posted September 9, 2013 Bad needle valve not seating. Strictly mechanical problem, nothing to do with the electrical system but I would consider replacing the harness before you start having problems from that...

I opened the bowl drains on 1 & 2 carbs and got no fuel from either.
dacheedah Posted September 9, 2013 #5 Posted September 9, 2013 you can splice in if it's only a few, put heat shrink over the wire, solder connections, a generous dab of dilithium grease and shrink.
lsutley Posted September 9, 2013 #6 Posted September 9, 2013 Duane, I have a harness from a MK II that is mostly complete. Since I began the rewiring of my 86 I no longer need the spare. If it would help you, send me a PM an I will get it out to you.
Huggy Posted September 9, 2013 #7 Posted September 9, 2013 I feel for you! Mine did that the first time I started it. Not sure why though. May have had something to do with sitting for 11 years since last started. Who knows. I replaced the drain lines with longer ones. I restarted mine and there was no fuel coming out of the over flow tubes. So other factors where at play, just don't know what. Luckily I only singed the wires for the rear brake fluid level sensor.
mralex714 Posted September 11, 2013 Author #8 Posted September 11, 2013 This has been destroyed on my bike. Does anyone know what this is or what it does? http://www.ebay.com/itm/86-YAMAHA-XVZ13-XVZ1300-VENTURE-ELECTRICAL-COMPONENT-38-/330967048723?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d0f2c6213&vxp=mtr
mralex714 Posted September 11, 2013 Author #9 Posted September 11, 2013 I spoke with an insurance adjuster today and without seeing the bike they want to total it.
Black Owl Posted September 11, 2013 #10 Posted September 11, 2013 I spoke with an insurance adjuster today and without seeing the bike they want to total it. That is understandable. If they need to replace the OEM harness, that is going to cost more than the FMV of the bike. You can always negotiate to purchase the salvage back from them and attempt your own repairs.

Now they want a shop to look at it to get an estimate on repairs. It will be going to my regular mechanic on Monday.

mralex714 Posted October 2, 2013 Author #13 Posted October 2, 2013 I got my bike from the shop yesterday. The insurance company paid me to repair it rather than total it out (I ended up with a few dollars less, but don't have deal with salvage or reconstructed title by not buying back from the insurance company). I decided to wait on the repairs (have another bike) and had the bike towed home. I really hadn't looked at it before going to the shop but I did today and after peeling back melted tape from the wiring harness I found very little actual damage to wiring.. I think I will just replace the few that look questionable and go from there. BTW the shop quoted 14 hours labor for the harness, ouch.
